|

I am planning some long runs with the idea of getting up to IB level. Ultimately I want to do a big circuit, Brisbane, Broken Hill, Ayers Rock, back via Mt Isa, Longreach. I've never seen Ayers Rock except out of a plane window at 30,000ft.
Now there's some pretty long stretches in there without petrol stops and plenty of opportunities to push some serious speeds at times. So has anyone done some accurate measuring of fuel consumption at various speeds for an 11RS? Say at a steady 70mph, 80mph, 90mph etc?
It would be good to actually fit a fuel computer that accurately measure fuel consumption.
We're doing a run in a few weeks to Mitchel and back in a day which is about 1200ks, so will record that as well.
Any thoughts welcome. _________________ K1100RS '97

Not at steady speeds, but FWIW I can say that over the nearly 5000 Km I have done on the 1100LT since I got it, most of it city traffic, I've averaged 5.58 L/100km; you could probably use that as a worst case scenario
You do remember that the NT introduced a speed limit a while back so serious speeds are at your own judgement _________________ David, owner of:

Yep, understand that. The main (only) 2 highways are 130kph now bugger it. Fortunately the roads are long and straight and you can see potential traps. I believe the plane speed spotters are mainly above the road to Perth, but will do some research before I believe it! I guess seeing how the trucks behave will be the key. They know what can be done, and those "100 speed limited" signs are a joke
AAMOI the NT government were complaining the other day that the road toll had gone up since they reduced the unlimited speed to 130, so to fix it they thought they would reduce it again to 110....rocket scientists those guys!! _________________ K1100RS '97

Awesome, thanks. I think I've been getting about the same here too, but I haven't being doing steady speed, more like tearing up and down mountains. Confirms what you said Chris. That's about 320kms. May have to take some fuel! I'll have to carry some water and a bunch of spares as well. I wonder how strong the Venturer rack is! _________________ K1100RS '97

Haven't thought that through yet and I remember seeing a thread on that here so was going to do a search for it today at work, but I at least thought the following initially (a lot of this is already onboard now):-
Water at least 10 litres and in 2 litre containers so a leak doesn't lose all of it.
2 litres of engine oil, 1 lt of gear oil
Clutch and throttle cables, fed into place ready to connect up at each end. practise swapping them over.
fuel filter
air filter
radiator cap
bullbs and fuses
copy of electrical diagrams and motronic fault codes
tyre repair kit, extra gas cylinders, small hand pump
one of those tyre sealing cans, although I hate them ie won't use till all else fails
valves and caps
practise getting wheels off and on without jacks etc
Adding to the tool kit although once again a lot of this is already on the bike now
cloth tape
little can of wd40
little gas soldering iron and solder
random electrical wire
electrical tape
multimeter
cable ties
wire cutters
little needle nose pliers
vice grips (doubles as hammer)
left hand metric shifting spanner
big mofo screwdriver flat blade (doubles as a crowbar/lever)
extra spanners and decent screwdrivers
random collection of nuts, bolts and screws
tiewire
torch, head and handheld
rags
personal epirb (from the boat and yes it's a nice new one with built in GPS etc)
first aid kit, update my first aid cert (already booked in for week after next)
scotch (JW Black)
RACQ card
credit card
laptop computer with 3G card and workshop manuals and porn
maybe spark plugs although not convinced they are a need to have these days, been decades since I saw one fail
a Telstra sim card (currently on Vodafone which only really works in the cities)
GPS and paper maps
V sheet
This is just the start so don't flame me yet!! Just so you know I spent nearly 5 years working in the deserts as a surveyor mapping them so am pretty familiar with what it's like out there! And that was before mobile phones! _________________ K1100RS '97

How many km's is the trip ?
I'll dig in my archies and see what I took when we went to Zim.
The other year I did a non stop trip to Cape Town, a tad under 1500km.. straight down the N1 highway..was cruising nicely at 160-180kph.. Did the trip in about 16hrs ( I think) _________________ ******************************

damn, maybe i really need to take the flap thingy out of the fuel cap so i can fill it more, but i think 175 is the safe max on my rs. i know i have been unable to start it in my drive way due to slope at that mileage. do you have the flap removed? _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |

I still have the flap in all of my bikes. I prefer it that way.
The low fuel light is out on my RS. I've never bothered to fix it because I don't care for them, especially at night. At the end of a long day, when I pulled off of I-10 exit at my destination, I noticed that my trip odometer read 205 miles. Fortunately there was a gas station right there. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Water at least 10 litres ………..Good idea take drinking water
2 litres of engine oil, 1 lt of gear oil ……….. I’d take 500ml of egine oil and buy more when filing up
Clutch and throttle cables, ………. Yep, no argument there
fuel filter ……….. Change it before you leave
air filter …………Ditto
radiator cap …. You can buy the internal sealing part, maybe swap that before the trip.
bullbs and fuses ……..Absolutly
copy of electrical diagrams and motronic fault codes ……ditto
tyre repair kit, extra gas cylinders, small hand pump ….. I took tyre repair kit, BMX bike pump, mini elecrtic air compressor removed from its housing.
one of those tyre sealing cans, …………..Yep, I took two
valves and caps …………. Yep
practise getting wheels off and on without jacks etc ….Yep, the front will be a challenge
cloth tape …… Yep
little can of wd40 …… Na…use engine oil
little gas soldering iron and solder ….. Na..twist or crimp wires.
random electrical wire …. Yep, just a couple of meters
electrical tape ….Na..use cloth tape.
multimeter …Yeah..I took a tiny cheapo digital meter.
cable ties ….Yep
wire cutters Yep
little needle nose pliers .Yep
vice grips (doubles as hammer) ….Yep, I took small ones
left hand metric shifting spanner …… Are you also kack handed
big mofo screwdriver flat blade (doubles as a crowbar/lever) ……..Yep
extra spanners and decent screwdrivers Yep…I check what sizes I needed so I wouldn’t carry a size not used on the bike
random collection of nuts, bolts and screws… Yep
tiewire …Absolutely
torch, head and handheld ….. I took a small bright handheld..I had someone to hold it
rags … just a couple,,wrapped the tools in them.
personal epirb (from the boat and yes it's a nice new one with built in GPS etc) …WTF is this ???
first aid kit, update my first aid cert (already booked in for week after next) ………ABSOLUTLY

Some of the roads I may be on don't have a lot of traffic ie SFA traffic actually and no one for hundreds of miles. The EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is a satellite thingy that tells rescue services that you are in danger and need rescuing. The ones with the GPS tell them where you are within 20 metres. You only use it if you are on the side of the road with a broken leg and no one comes by to help.
The V sheet is an orange plastic sheet with a big black V about 2 metres square which is visible from air and is the international symbol for distress. Both very small and easy to take. They normally live on the boat.
Good idea on the HT lead and yep i have a full set of allen keys.
Some good ideas there, will tailor my list.
Cheers
