|
|
With my OEM rotors down to about half of recommended spec, I figured it's time to shell out the bucks for some new ones (no shit, Sherlock!). After a $2200 quote (for 3 rotors, parts alone, before taxes) scared me away from the Bavarians, I started my online search. Tonight I placed my order: Galfer wave rotors in the front, EBC round in back, plus new pads all around... all for under a grand, shipped. SWEET! (Thank you Melissa at www.cyclebrakes.com)
The catch is I hear the ABS ring is hell to move from my stock rotor to the new ones. Anyone have tips to help me through the process (ABS ring, or brake job in general) with a minimum amount of head pounding?
Thanks in advance! _________________ First words whispered to me by my K1100RS: Faster! Faster! |

Heat the bolts with a torch prior to trying to remove them.
If the heads still strip then just drill the head off. It's not like you're going to reuse the carriers, right? (If you're very careful drilling the head off then there is often enough to get the rest out with some Vice Grips.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Remember to check cleance between front abs ring and the bushings
on the disk.Trim abs ring as needed.I installed a galfer rear disk and
removed the standart rivets and made a 6mm tread out of the 5mm
rivet holes. There was no room for the bolts and nuts due to the abs ring.

If you need a torch to heat up the bolts consider a Blazer Hot Shot. I got one to use as my desk top cigar lighter and found it to be amazingly versatile, from sweating copper pipe to heating up bolts. The flame is fully adjustable and it takes regular cigar lighter propane.
Available at a cigar store near you

Fixed.
I have a torch similar to Ted's. Also handy when making creme brulee. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Many thanks - if it took methane I could have powered it for years after the dog managed to swipe a half pound of Stilton blue cheese off the counter a while back. _________________

Thanks for the tips Gents!
Ordered the screws to mount the ABS ring today (thanks for pointing out the obvious... sometimes it IS necessary!).
Checked the shop at work for a torch (butane will have to suffice, although methane is in much greater supply). Will bring my grinder as well, JIC.
Also ordered a new piston for my leaking front brake fluid container... hope that's all it needs.
Getting excited and nervous. This will be my biggest job yet. Fingers crossed! _________________ First words whispered to me by my K1100RS: Faster! Faster! |

Make sure you prime it properly - there is a tech piece around here somewhere _________________

BC - you might want to get the rebuild kit for that front master cylinder. _________________ Jim

Um... hoping you'll excuse my ignorance here, but isn't that what I'm getting with the piston? It's what the Beemer dealer recommended when I explained my problem, and the pics I saw on BeemerBoneYard's site seemed to show a piston and a cap in what they labelled as a rebuild kit. Is there something else I should be ordering?
