Something that has always angered me about motorcycle makers. They simply can not make a decent seat. We pay thousands of dollars for a beautiful bike that we can not sit on without needing therapy. Someone needs to slap these people on the heads. If Corbin, Sargent and others can make a good seat why can't BMW, Kawasaki or Honda? _________________ 1997 K1100LT

Maybe the Mfgr's need to just outsource the seat production to better sources from the start. _________________ Ride safe.

Despite my bottom/back problems- I REALLY like this bike. Think of an LT/RS hybrid (especially weather protection with the electric windshield mechanism), make the controls lighter and add a stronger engine with a really wide powerband and you have a Concours.
I don't notice the weight- maybe 700# w/ fuel- I actually think that it can be countersteered into tight corners easier than the RS. The latest issue of Cycle World has a short article on a long term 2008 C-14 that they recently returned to Kaw. They even mentioned that someone forgot to tell the bike that something that weighs so much shouldn't handle that well.
Now if I can just get my back and rump to like it too......
The Sargent seat is on its way Fedex- should have it by Thurs(?) _________________ John & Cathy

I'm in lust and living vicariously.....
Once it's broken in I'm curious to see what touring range you realize on a full tank of gas.

Sargent seat is here. Hopefully it will do its job. BTW- They put out a very good product- came with the hardware already on it. Will post pictures.
Might have to do the bars next- that will be more $$ than the seat since the stock towers have to go and an aftermarket top triple clamp plus conventional bars are used. A major PITA that a $12K leftover needs this to make it a comfortable bike.
Butt (pun intended) we'll see how it goes tomorrow on a ride.
As a side note, the RS is back in my garage. Don't know if I can sell it- the bike I hate to love and love to hate.....Just do not tell SWMBO about the brick. She still thinks it is going. I am thinking about making it into a K1100S- a naked RS.
So I guess I need to (at least temporarily) rejoin as an official K owner.

Well an update. The Sargent seat made a world of difference. Funny how it feels just a bit too firm and flat when I first sit on it- then a couple of hours later I realize that nothing bothers me .
The only thing I can compare it to is when you first sit in a good import car seat- those tend to feel too stiff but feel better as you spend more time on it.
Also a little known fact is that the footpeg mounts can be moved rearward- there is a duplicate set of mounting holes about an inch back. They are blind and need to be drilled through and tapped, which I have done- much better- a slight rearset effect.
So it does fit me better. I am still thinking of slightly lower handlebars, but they are $$$. We'll see.
Now- this afternoon the snow finally melted on our private road and about an hour ago I got out for a few miles and got over the 1000 mile break-in mark.
Took it to about 9500 rpms (redline is 10500) in second.
I am literally speechless. Fortunately the grips are fastened well. I understand that this thing puts out on the far side of 150hp at the crank.
Un-****ing believable.
More later when my thoughts catch back up........... _________________ John & Cathy

John,
For about $1,500 you can have that 150HP at the rear wheel. This makes a REALLY fun touring bike.

based on CHP reports... not good. Rather poor, actually. That and the limited alternator are the two main problems they have.
A friend has one and has clocked 100,000 miles in 4 years I think. He really likes the bike. _________________ M N B

Mine is very controlable able at walking speeds. With 41.5 A of alternator output, I've never had a problem
with electrical capacity.
I guess I'm still in love and blind to all it's 'major'problems

Mick,
Good to hear that you like the C-14. Excellent. Sounds like you have done a few engine mods also, huh? Must be a flippin' rocketship. BTW, how fast do you go through tires?
It would have been fun to see what mine could have become with a new exhaust, flies out and computer mods. Looking back, THE biggest thing that soured me on the Concours was the upright rider position- I have very long arms and prefer to be leaning forward when I ride.
Anyway- have fun on your Connie.

Hi John,
My last Michelin Pilot Road2s did 8l,300 on the rear (LOTS of self-control) and 9,500 on the front. The factory tires only made it about 3K miles.
I had to raise the bars a little ćause I hated the angle of the stock bar position. Too low and angled too far down. different strokes....... my sleevel length is 35" sort of monkey-like here too.

Yeah, my factory rubber got to 4000 miles and I wore out the front first (never had that happen before)
The stock rear may still be alive somewhere. During Hungry Lobsta II, OTG's rear rubber was showing cords and he still had to make it the 300 or so miles back home to Long Island. I had the worn rear from the Concours in my shed and we did a tire swap. He sold his FZ a bit later, so that pretty worn tire might still be in use.
The PR2s that replaced those were getting down there by the time I sold the Connie with about 11k on the clock so they had done 7+k at that point.
But I know what you mean by hard to have self-control- even in stock form that engine was HOLEE CHIT especially with WOT in 2nd from 4000-5000 rpms. Felt like a catapult. _________________ John & Cathy

Is that a Yamaha FZ1? Cute little bike but not in the same class. I put a few miles on my buddies'FZ1 after modding it a little, too small and no low end torque at all. It was a rocket above 5K RPM but dead below that. Silly little liter bike.

After the tuning, that feeling starts at 1200 RPM He changes the valve timing, ignition timing and opens the secondary throttle plates sooner and wider. feels like you lit a minuteman III when you go WFO now. I LOve it.
