Theo,

I sent three sets of OEM leads off to the manufacturers for evaluation - they had results very similar to your own with all 3 sets - all over the place! Rolling Eyes

They also had 3 sets of coils to test, so the leads weren't tested in isolation.

He also tested 2 other aftermarket sets - we'll keep those results private. Wink

The manufacturer was very specific about keeping the leads seperated - hence the little plastic seperator. Several owners told me [ during the development stages ] that MOST plugs came without the screw on nipples and it's an absolute pain to get them in some areas. So, I asked the manufacturer to include them.

I also quizzed him on lengths and his response was that in the real World this made so little difference as to be insignificant.

What HAS been apparant is that ALL the OEM leads tested [ K75/100/1100 ] have all had at least one lead per set that was faulty.

I guess leads are one of those fit and forget items when it comes to maintainance. Rolling Eyes

Maybe that's why we're here now, for replacement leads and improved maintenance.

Whose were they and why keep it a secret?

Shouldn't they be pretty well insulated to prevent cross lead interference as well as general interference to other of the bike's electrical components?

I've always replaced the spark plug leads on my cars every 40,000 miles or so as a part of routine maintenance. Strange that BMW would build high mile bikes and leave them off of the routine maintenance checklist:
http://smithduck.home.comcast.net/~smithduck/bmw/tech/genmaint/BMW%20K%20bike%20Maintenance%20Schedule%20with%20K1100.pdf

Both of my K1100s seemed to run noticably more smoothly once I installed the Magnecor leads.

If you guys are replacing the spark plug leads it's a good time to swap in some new plugs (NGK iridium) and then synch the TBs.

As to the "secrecy" - the manufacturers only tested 1 set from each manufacturer - NOT sufficient to form an informed opinion. As an engineer - I do not rely on one test for anything, and don't expect others to either. Cool

I guess at 8mm. they are as well insulated as any aftermarket lead, however it's normal practice with hi-performance leads to keep them seperate.

Yes Scott - I arrived at this point because I suspected the leads on several of the bikes I got last year - a suspicion duly proved correct when the leads were tested ! At least 2 of the lead sets were badly chaffed on 2 leads where they had doubled back and were rubbing on the plug cover strip.

BTW - I fitted Magnecor leads to my Kay last year and found them to be fine. Laughing Just that I couldn't get a "deal" with them, although they were very helpful - they were also quite long winded with their responses. Rolling Eyes

I'm happy wth what we've got now. Wink

Mine showed up today.

I like the fact that the new ones don't fold over like the old ones did.
I may have to get a 2nd set for the '97. Very Happy

Beach, tell AC, job well done.

Edit: update photo links

OK here goes - protocol checked - I have found the German Flying Brick club to be chilled and informative. I like the idea of communicating with my German cousins - as I do with my US counterparts.
www.flyingbrick.de.

There - ready to have wrist slapped. Duck, glad you understand - I even sent 3 sets of OEM leads for evaluation !

OK I posted on the FB site about the Yellow leads on Scott's bike. Super sano installation.

However the question I asked was - do we think a 3 wire seperator [ for cylinder #'s 1,2,3 ] at the junction of #4 would make a visually better installation - YES I know you only see it if the cover is off - maybe I'm getting too anal with this.

BTW - I hope you notice I had the manufacturers install the coil caps at 90 degrees to eliminate any "twist" in the wire ..... like I said - anal.

Word of caution - Uwe on the Flying Brick site has told me that his nipples came loose - ohh er missus [ !!!!].

Scott - can you get a 3 wire seperator in the US without any problems? If not, I'll send you one.

Now then where's that info on the K1200 leads?

That's indicated. It's really only 125 or so.

Sure, go for it.

As far as the 3-wire spacer, not sure how much it would help. Like you mentioned it's behind the cover and not visible.

My old wires also had a 90 angle connector at the coil.

I made sure to hear/feel a good "click" when putting them on the plugs.

I'll go red for my '97 when I get to that point.

My GPS once told me it was only 208 KM/h when the speedo was telling me well over 225..... i believe the GPS.... not the Speedo... same in this case, my touching the 140 is basically a little under 195 ish in km/h... but it sure feels nice!!!

Scott,

I mentioned it to the manufacturer yesterday and this morning a set of 4,3 and 2 wire seperators arrived for approval !

He will now include ALL 3 in the kits. I'm going to try them out next week on my Fighter before I rip it apart for painting, detailing etc. - jeez Spring is here and I have no ride !!! Just for a laugh I'll fit the 10mm Hi-Po mothers on.

He was very impressed with your installation !

Funds shaken, ordered a set tonight, I estimate a total cost of $77.95 including shipping.

Looking forward to adding another RAM product to my bike!
