Hey guys,

Have any of you ever changed the transparent covers on the small L-R petrol & temperature gauges on a K1100RS? My meters are working fine but the glass / plastic covers are cracked and faded.

As always, no one here seems to know or have it, and all the shops are recommending me to change the meters themselves, which is nuts since they're working and it's only the laminated covers that are in bad shape.

Can they be changed? Or is it a 'sealed' unit?

Thanks in advance for any advice! Smile

Chris

Hi Chris
They are supposed to be a sealed unit but Im sure that a few people on here have been able to strip them down, the bezel that holds the glass on is crimped over when they are made but with a bit of careful work with a screwdriver you should be able to bend it out enough remove it and then bend it back to hold the new glass in (with some sealer as it wont be as tight as before.

Hey guys,

Well, since they already looked so bad I figured I'd give it a shot and try to replace the glass covers, which are plastic actually with a laminate over them. Here's how bad they looked...

First off it's almost impossible to remove the black outer ring to get to the cover so I had to cut the plastic cover with a sharp knife and remove the bits stuck in the ring with needle nose pliers; you can see the removed plastic in the background...

As expected, both gauges are in great condition below the faded plastic...

Went and had 2 pieces of glass cut out at a nearby shop that specialises in glass frames...

Using the gauges own rear housing as a brace when installing the new glass...note the sophisticated high-precision tool a.k.a. Nerf gun dart in the background used as a 'sucker' to position the glass when sticking in! Razz

Done! New glass installed, stuck in place with superglue, all sealed off Smile

Nice work Chris. Looks great. Sometimes it is more satisfying to refurbish.

But then isn't that the recurring theme to owning a K1100?

They look great Chris. Are the rings now loose on the gauges? How did you take up the space where the original plastic lenses were captured under the rings?
I have a pair of gauges that need the same repair in my tool box.

someone posted here awhile back they got the metal rings off, then put them back on. I'm not doing the search, though.

Thanks guys! Am quite happy with the result; and it's even more satisfying for someone like me who as I previously informed, is able to f-up a peanut butter sandwich...hahaha! Razz

Mick, the rings are not loose at all. Prior to cutting out the old plastic covers, I did try to pry those black rings off from the back, but they are REALLY sealed in there, extremely hard to pry off without damaging them. I was also worried that if I'd managed to pry them off, the damage from doing so would make putting them back properly a problem.

In my case for this job, the back of the meter is not touched, and as for the area where the original plastic cover was 'seated' in, it's a small gap that can't be seen so I left it. The new glass sits flush because it's actually stuck to the inner surface of the black ring Smile

That is damm good work.
I couls do with a similar solution to replacing the 'glass' in my instrument cluster. Can that be done without buying a complete cover ?

Thanks! You're in luck, my instrument cluster is still disassembled at home, I'll go back tonight and see if that can be done, will let you know later Smile

Thanks Gui! Smile

Hey Malcolm(t), bad news I'm afraid, the 'glass' plastic covering the main meters is one solid piece and it looks really stuck in there with rubber seals and all. Also the symbols for the turn indicator arrows, high beam, warning light and 'N' are imprinted in the inner part of the centre piece, not a separate section. The 2 rubber buttons for the clock adjustment are also integrated into the glass, and it all waterproofed. I think breaking it out and replacing it will be a huge hassle, plus it may not be water resistant anymore.
