I had a bit of an issue yesterday that has me confused. I was going out for a ride and when I rolled the bike out of the garage I noticed my Fuel+ had deprogramed itself, that's to say it lost it's setup instructions. When I started the bike the battery voltage dropped to 8 or less. My voltmeter stops at 8. I know that the Fuel+ will lose it's setting less than 6.

The battery is only two years old and I keep it on a battery tender in the garage. I put it away and back on the tender and took my airhead instead.

Today I checked all the battery connections and checked voltage etc and it seems fine. I have tried multiple starts throughout the day, and everything seems fine. The voltage needle barely moves off of 12 volts.

I seem to remember a guy at a rally with a K75 with a similar issue and he had talked to a mechanic who told him something about the starter if worn will cause something like this if it stops at a worn/dirty spot and if you roll the bike back a bit it will move off the bad spot and work normally. He did this and was able to get it going.

So, anyone ever heard of something like this? And what can I do about it?

Thanks

Sounds like to me that your alternator slip rings may have some tarnish on them, or the regulator is failing. I had a similar issue with my '95 not being able to be above 12.5V when running. The 1st time I pulled the alt out and polished the rings and reassembled. The voltage improved about 3/4 volt but not much more.
I replaced the voltage regulator during my winter overhaul and so far it's running like it should, at 14V + above idle.

I have heard of others that have had electrical issues related to a diry starter armature. Mostly the problems have been either a total "no start" or the electrical items normally powered thru the relief relay lose power.
I haven't heard of the alternator not charging the battery caused by a faulty starter.

Scott,

To clarify, once it starts the alternator cuts in and the voltage rises to normal running levels. It just dropped much more than normal during the start cycle and apparently before to clear the Fuel+.

Thanks

You say that your battery is only 2 yrs old. The next question may be what brand/kind is it.
Some batteries have been known to have a short life span.

BTW have you checked or reset/changed your min battery start voltage threshold point in the fuel plus setup? You should be able to lower the value at which it reports a fault.
Infact I need to rest mine as well. I had my FP disconnected for about 2 months while I did my overhaul and every time I have started the bike I get the low start voltage(8v approx) fault. I think the normal min setpoint is around 6.8V
I had the battery in the house during that time and had a tender on it once I installed it back in the bike so I don't think that mine is a battery issue either.

Scott,

It's a Panasonic SLA. I am not aware of that Fuel+setting, I'll have to look it up. I have the older version 3.1 that replaces the digital clock.

I plan to pull the battery and take to Autozone and have them load test it. It bothers me that I cannot duplicate the problem.

Thanks

Well, the battery failed the load test. So I guess I will start there.

Thanks
