Hi Steve, Welcome, Please also find the "UK & ROI show yourselves" thread & post there. Hopefully with all the expertise here you won't need the "stealer" any more. My bets for the fault are sidestand switch or broken cable to ignition switch.

Sounds like an alternator or battery issue.

Duck, wouldn't it run with a good alternator and a bad battery?

Yes, I believe so. When I upgraded the driving lights on my LT before I upgraded the alternator (not an issue for the bike in question by the way since it's post-93) my bike experienced the same symptoms. It was daylight so I didn't know if the headlight was going dim but the ABS faulted and then the bike quit as I'd been overtaxing the alternator and draining the battery. Fortunately I was going downhill so I was able to turn the driving lights off and compression start it to recover.

This issue might be a battery or alternator wiring/connection issue (like a loose ground) or the alternator has gone south.

To the new owner: If it is a bad alternator then don't buy a new one from BMW. They're horrendously expensive and there's plenty of good used ones around. Or it may just need new brushes.
