Gents,

Regards my other thread about my 1998 K1100LT, due to sub-standard petrol, suffering from dreadful misfiring & spluttering I have now had a reply from Tesco, the company who sold me the sub-standard petrol.

I have asked them to foot the bill for the work involved in cleaning out my petrol system …… they have refused.

In essence, they have stated …….

“it seems that misfiring & spluttering is quite a common problem with the BMW K110LT, (sic), motorcycle”……

Now I have owned 3 K100’s, (I did 44,000 miles in 18 months on one), a K1200 and this current K1100LT and I have never had them miss a beat let alone misfire once. They all performed perfectly.

The question to you guys, (I know the answer), is ……

Is there any evidence at all that the K1100LT is prone to “misfiring & spluttering”.

They have also state that …….

“owners of the BMW K110LT, (sic), motorcycle prefer to use Super Unleaded petrol to get optimum performance”.

…… which is complete bollocks.

I am relying on the knowledge of this forum to substantiate my case.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Hope my reply is relevent being from South Africa.
I've owned a 92' K1100RS for three years, it has 100,000km on the odo.
The bike runs on 93 unleaded and has NEVER missed a beat, i've tried it on 95 unleaded, it made no difference to bikes performance.

My 86' K75S is equally reliable, it also has 100,000km on the odo but i suspect its true km's are nearer 160,000km. The only time this bike missed a beat is one occasion when stuck in traffic in 40deg c heat and i suspect this was fuel vapourising in the injector gallery.
In normal weather it hasnt missed one beat.

couriously my old hacks have covered more KM's, cost less to maitain and run, and been far more reliable than 'modern' recent jap and italian bikes owned by buddies.

my 2c worth

Hi
I have an Ex police K1100LTIC (108,000 miles) and owned a K1100RS before, NEITHER of them spluttered or missfired EVER, they are (and were for the RS) always run on standard unleaded fuel NOT super, the few times i have picked up the wrong nozzel (super instead of plain unleaded) it made no differance to the performance or the way it ran.
The throttle response is ALWAYS clean and INSTANT, never delayed.

For them to say that the K1100's are known for missfiring is total crap, if they were WHY would the UK (and other) police forces have used them for so many years, as we have seen with the new ST1300 honda, if there is the whiff of a problem they dump the bikes and use something else (most even cut the headstock off the ST's due to being un-stable)

Get them to give you the source of their information so you can confirm it with BMW, Im sure that it is a reliable source Wink

Rob

I am staggered they have suggested this.

I have also emailed BMW Motorrad UK with advice on how to address Tesco's scurrilous comments and am awaiting a reply.

As above, if they;re telling you this they must have a source of this information, if they expect you to accept this they must provide proof or the source of this information.
Ask them to provide it.

Mine FWIW does occasionally when warm spit / pop very very slightly as you close the throttle, (on the overrun as it were), from hard acceleration. It hasn't as yet shown evidence of misfiring on acceleration, throttle response is sharp and progressive, i have only used standard unleaded to date because i'm tight, it's too expensive as is and unless anyone can wow me with miraculous claims of awesomeness i'll not likely use 'super' anything anytime soon.

Mine is a 96 with 104k on

I have now had e-mails from 4 BMW Franchised dealers in the UK, plus an e-mail from Mottorad, denying all knowledge of the existance of any problems with the K1100LT.

They have all stated what we know ..... the bike is bullet proof.

I think its time Tesco received a stern reply and another request for payment.

Update:

Put Pro-Boost in yesterday and it worked unbelievably well.

Didn’t miss a beat home or back to petrol station this morning. Really fast.

As tank was almost empty this morning ….. put in Wynns Injector Cleaner then filled up with super unleaded.

Bike still went superbly.

Wynns Injector Cleaner Restores accurate fuel injector spray patterns so I thought I’d try it …..

So far so good ....

Not sure how I missed your first post Dave, but I did, so I will reply here.

I have had similar problems with Tesco petrol, both with the bike and car and not used it for ages now. I have had no problems with any other supermarket petrol though.

I first noticed a drop in mpg and just thought that I had been twisting the throttle a bit to hard, then I noticed it with the car as well. The next time I filled the bike and car up, I used BP, and all back to normal. So I tried Tesco again and not only the drop in mpg was back but I had some coughs and splutters as well both with the bike and car. That was quite some time ago and I have not used Tesco since.

There was some suggestion, and I really cant remember where, that the percentage of bio ethanol in some types of petrol is higher than others. weather this has any effect I am not sure. Maybe there is someone out there that knows far more about this.

Cheers.

Rich.

Some petroleum refineries switch to winter blend fuel during the winter months. I wonder if this had any effect on the LT?
