Good morning all...
As "rider to rider"... does anyone of you have personal experience or knowledge of "rotator cuff" repair surgery ?? I was told that surgery was best way to rid myself of the omnipresent pain in both shoulders... and I told them ( Drs ) that with a fresh riding season on the 'doorstep' there would be no way to compromise that !! So I guess the question is, have any of you been faced with this problem(s) and if so "how" was it ( as a rider ) resolved for you, short-term and/or long-term ??
Best regards and thanks in advance for any advice you'd care to offer ...

Ernie,
Details? Either here or by PM.
Are your symptoms only on use, only on rest or both?
Does the pain radiate down into your arm(s)?
Is the motion of either or both restricted? (like can you put your hand behind your back or behind your neck?)
Let me know.

as a competitive water skier, I have dislocated my rotator cuff a few time/ and seen it happen a number of times. It usually caused a sitting dull pain and sharp when tried to be used with major decrease in strienght.
I have a PT who is also a DC, he specializes is sports medicine. He literally pops my sholder back into place....After a few days of rest its as good as new...
I dont know if it is similar to what you are discribing, however i never used surgury to correct it.
good luck... |

I have been told I need surgery on my shoulder for the last few years. I have scar tissue from old damage and an inpingment which is cutting into the rotator cuff. Where I work alot of the guys have had the surgery and the recovery time has varied greatly. Most have not come back 100% and the few that did are not the really active ones. I have managed with alot of ice when it hurts and will put off surgery for as long as I can. _________________ Ron

Hi, John,
Instead of a K11OG Tech Day, do I discern the need for a K11OG Orthopedic Clinic Day? _________________ Ride Safe,

Hi Phil....
Answer: NO !! I can live with pain and have for a long time, BUT when the Doc (Ortho-MD ) suggested, almost mandated, surgery.... I really stepped back and said a loud WHOOOAAA ! The reason I posed the question was/is to see how other riders have confronted the problem, any recoup problems,,,and what the result(s) may have been. NOTHING could ever replace a good 'tech day' mucking about with grease, wrenches, friends and beer !!
Hey...! Spring is JUST 44 days away and its SNOWING !

Definitely no expert, but often if left too long surgery can become less successful, but the right person to talk to about it is your doctor of course! _________________ K1100RS '97

I had a severe dislocation back in '80 or '81 - the kind one can only get when the jack slips out from under the truck one is installing snow chains on - and the fender hits the arm that's on top of the tire. My arm was stuck straight out - wouldn't move up or down. Had to get the next door neighbor's drunk son in law to take me to the emerg in his 4 wheel drive. They had to knock me out to put the arm back in.
It got worse for a number of years, to the point it would fall out when I was chopping wood - I'd stop and pop it back in and keep chopping. Ruined my skiing career. It eventually got to the point it sounded like there was gravel in there when I moved my arm. Last time I had a problem was sometime in '86. Now I can't remember which arm it was.
Good luck, Ernie! _________________ Jim

there was an article in the bmwmoa on just a couple months ago about a guy who had torn his rotator cuff and had surgery and was finally getting back to riding. i have thrown that issue away (don't really have much re-read potential) otherwise i would scan it and send it your way. anyone have that issue? _________________ (formerly) 1993 k1100rs |
