|

Here in São Paulo we have now temperatures in the 33-35°C range.
When my KLT is very hot, with the temp gauge needle in the red zone, I'm having a lot of gasoline pouring trhu the fuel tank drain hose.
I try to open the fuel tank cap to relieve the pressure, but the problem is solved for a short period, and soon the gasoline starts to leak again.
What's happening?
Maybe a problem with the fuel tank cap?
Thanks in advance.

Guilherme - I had the same problem a few years ago. First make sure that neither the rain drain or tank vent hose is kinked under the tank.
Have you installed the air accumulator cup? Or do you still have two hoses that lead down to either side of the bike?
There is a TSB (technical service bulletin) for this issue. The problem is that unused gas that is returned from the injectors is spraying out of a little nozzle on the "shed biscuit" - under the right conditions, the gas that sprays out gets picked up by the vent and comes out the drain hose.
The fix is to put a length of gasolene resistant hose on that little nipple on the shed biscuit - use a stainless screw type clamp. I forget the exact length specified in the TSB - maybe about 29 cm. I think it was actually 29.+ cm. The loose end of the hose has to lay down near the pump. This ensures that return fuel is not spraying around the tank, but is being squirted back into the gas in the tank.
If Julius at Gina's hadn't been such a freak about keeping people out of the shop, I'd have pictures for you. Or, if it was summertime, I could go out and take some pix. We have two feet of snow here. _________________ Jim

Wait a minute - I just noticed you said your temp gauge is in the red. Do you need a new thermostat? I rode through higher temps than that this past summer and my gauge never got up to the red. I do have a three core radiator. _________________ Jim

I had the same fuel leak problem on the '95 during the summertime. If it was hot after a fillup (ok overfill) the fuel would want to leak out.
Once I installed the air accumulator cup for the vacuum break effect, the fuel stopped leaking.
The cup was less than $10us. The other breather vent line I just cut off and plugged. _________________ Ride safe.

Jim.
The temperature neddle just touch the red mark when the radiator fan starts.
Actually, the neddle don't enters the red zone, but just touch.
Is that OK?
I didn't understand very well the air accumulator cup issue.
Do you know when I can found a scheme about that?
And that top case supports are in place yet?
Thanks.

What BMW calls the air accumulator (which accumulates gas ) is part 16132307467 and sits below both vents to get rid of excess gas.

If I overfill, and the bike sits in the sun, especially on the side stand, it will still dump gas out the overflow.
That's a separate issue from going down the road with gas dumping out. _________________ Jim

Temps like that Gui you should have a fan switch. One of the best mods I did on my bike. The stock radiator fan switch comes on WAY too late. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Yea, I try to purposly not fill as full for regular fill ups, but will push it when traveling fuel stop to fuel stop.
Sometimes I forget. _________________ Ride safe.

+1
A fan switch really really helps on hot days. _________________ John & Cathy

The "air accumulator" sits right below the 2 nipples that have hoses coming off them on the bottom of the tank. Fancy name for a plastic funnel. You simply remove the two hoses and attach the hose that drains at the rear of the bike to the bottom of the funnel. Plug the other one. Done. I can take pictures if you want. Tank's currently off so it would be relatively easy.

I made this today, with the help of my mechanic, Nene:
1- removed the fuel tank cap;
2- identified the return line in the top right of the tank;
3- put a 30cm gasoline resistent hose in the return line exit and attached it to the front base of the fuel tank.
So, now, when running the engine, the returning fuel from the injection system is delivered directly in the lowest part of the tank, inside the gasoline level.
I hope this can resolve the fuel loose problem.
I'll ask my mechanic, Nene, for how much he could make another rear top case brackets reinforcements.
Only Drake and M. Red have interest?

I would also be interested in the bracket.
