|
|
I bought a set of cheap front brake pads on EBay for the k1100RS and went to install them and they look identical to BMW OEM parts except they don't have the little springs riveted to them. Should I get some rivets and put them on the new pads or are they not really necessary ?
Thanks in advance... _________________ Jim Benge, San Diego, CA.

I'm pretty sure those are there as an anti-squeal device.
Spray some of this on the backs of the pads instead:

They are anti-rattle springs, if you don't hear the noise, you
don't need them. _________________ Mick McKinnon

Pads rattle too, these pads were designed long before we had
full floating rotors. _________________ Mick McKinnon

i bought a cheap set of rear pads off of Fleabay to replace the OEM's
first what a differance in stopping power if i am not paying attention the ABS activates with a heavy foot but i did purchase i a euro made set for the front... same issues it will put me over the handle bars.
but as for the clips / springs they should alllready be their. most of the time you only need to replace the thingy if it is rusted away and dose not work. i have learned over time the anti rattle clips do more harm than good once the corrosion has set in. when i have reinstalled the buggers they tend cause the new pads to hang up and not retract fully from the rotor... _________________ fix the problem not the blame ; fix what is messed up ; NO one is to blame. |

Well I went ahead and took the springs off the old set and riveted them on the new set. That was easy enough, but I did have trouble putting the pads back on because the springs keep hanging up, finally got them on though. Don't know how they will react yet because I am just putting the bike back together after painting the whole right side after a tip over. Another story.
Thanks for the replies...... _________________ Jim Benge, San Diego, CA.

I recently fitted new pads with springs. They wouldn't fit until I had seriously altered them. At the time, I wondered if they were worth the bother as my previous bikes rarely had them fitted. Couldn't hear the rattle above the noise from the worn bobbins
Seriously, never ever heard a rattle without springs. just my 2d (English pence) _________________ Regards Tim,
