I just ordered a bunch of miscellaneous parts from Chicago BMW.
The following appeared on the screen after I placed my order:

I chuckled. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Yeah, their destination is a shelf in the back of Chicago BMW's warehouse. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

I can't beleive how much cheaper 2nd hand bikes are there. I had a look at the Chicago BMW web site at used and they are way cheaper than here!! Check out our dealer here in sunny Brisbane:-
http://www.morganandwacker.com.au/bmw/used-bmw.aspx
EG 2005 K1200S OZ price A$18k, US price US$9,250. Now even accounting for the exchange rate at 93c and GST thats a BIG difference!
My guess is most of these were brought in when our $ was low....sigh. _________________ K1100RS '97

I recv'd the same when I placed my order. Then a few working days later they sent an email that all of my parts have been ordered. I called and asked if maybe they had the clutch parts in stock and could send them along with out waiting for the nick-nack items. They said that nothing was in stock and had to be ordered. Hard to believe that I ordered 19 different items and not a one was in stock.
They said it would be a couple of weeks before the items ship to me. I will probably forget how to put the bike back together by then.

Hi, Jeff,
Suppose their normal parts order day is Tuesday. I order a part on Wednesday. It SHOULD be ordered from BMW the next Tuesday. It SHOULD arrive early the next week and SHOULD be shipped to me within a couple of days to arrive in 3 or 4 days. Worst case, parts should be in my hand in 3 weeks. I have ordered from Chicago BMW 3 times I can think of, and NEVER have I received the parts within a month. I NEVER order needed parts from them, only parts to replace those used from my parts drawer or which I plan to use a month or longer down the road. _________________ Ride Safe,

I've not had any experience with Chicago, I don't keep any real inventory to speak of. Oil filters and fluids are about all I keep in the garage. Everthing else(relays, cables, ff) I keep on the bike.
If I have a need to order something it's generally cause I want it for a purpose(as does everone else), not just to set on shelf(sorry Phil).
I'm one that doesn't like having something setting around torn apart or broke down for an extended period of time. Like Jeff was eluding to, easier to remember how it goes back together.
I can say that I have not had a bad experience from Max's.
Even if it was something that they didn't have in stock they still had it within a week or less, and out the door to me in less than 2 weeks from order date. _________________ Ride safe.

Hi, Scott,
I have 2 K75's, and up until a month and a half ago, I had 3. I do keep some things on the shelf, example, one set of "monkey nutz", drain plug (and fill plug) gaskets, valve cover gasket (2 piece) plus the half moons, alternator drive cup, etc. Last fall the "monkey nutz" in one of the K75's disintegrated and the vanes in the drive cup sheared. I had a set of "monkey nutz", but no drive cup. Max had me the drive cup in a week. The replacement "monkey nutz" and drive cup, from Chicago BMW, took over a month. I paid full price from Max, and got his usual great service. I paid a discounted price to Chicago and got much slower (but expected) service. _________________ Ride Safe,

I have gotten my order from them in as little as 3 days and as long as 5 weeks. Usually runs 2 to 3 weeks. I can understand mirror gaskets and badges not being in stock but I thought that they would have clutch parts. That will teach me for thinking! I am not bitching as I knew going in that delivery would be slow. Just being hopeful.

This thread is ironic. Chicago BMW and Chicago Harley-Davidson are owned by the same person. There's an active thread on HDForums.com about shipping delays, too. _________________ 2000 R1100RT

Though it wold be nice to have stuff shipped promptly, it really doesn't bother me. You pay for a level of service and with a 20% discount it's worth it you're spending more than $100 or don't need something yesterday. It also gives an indication of how much margin dealers make on parts. (and the list prices at my dealer are higher than Chicago BMW> _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Duck,
Most parts are 33% mark up. Oil filters and BMW OIL has the largest mark up of 45%
Believe it or not, I still order online for a lot of my parts. I pay 10% over cost on mine plus sales tax. So 20% from Chicago and no sales tax minus shipping is sometimes a better deal.

I guess I've been pretty lucky with Chicago BMW, they've had odd parts in stock for both of my bikes.
Admittedly, I have made followup calls after about 4 days because I live fairly close, but no complaints overall. 20% off is nice. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Heck you live in Boulibase. You're only an hour's ride away. I'd just order online and then pick it up in person. (Probably not in January though - especially with Global Warming and all that going on. ) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Duck,
You know how sometimes it's best not to look in the kitchen of your favorite restaurant?
Well looking at CBMW's parts department is like that. If you backed up to the door with a dump truck and unloaded it......well.
But they are still my favorite new parts source for both bikes and manage to dig up what I need.

Yeah, if you can be patient and are spending any amount of money it's worth it.
My order finally showed up on Friday, February 12.
So: I ordered on Jan. 19.
When I called on February 1st, the guy told me the order "just entered the sytem on the 29th." WTF?
He said he expected to ship Friday.
When I called last Thursday, he said he'd been waiting for parts to come in and even though one still wasn't in (a switch insert) he thought I could wait for that and shipped the prior Friday as promised.
What's weird is how long it takes them to get parts. If they don't have it in stock, Ride West, my local dealer, usually has it in a couple of days or one day if I"m willing to pay a 10% markup for expediting - which I often do if it's a cheap part.
Not complaining, just observing. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I think they get stuff in pretty quickly, but it gets lost on the floor before they get it shipped. Not unusual at all to see them pull parts out of boxes on the floor to fill my order. (Someone else's parts?)
