Finally stuck my new Ikon shock on today. At first I thought I was driving a cadillac with no shocks at all, but then adjusted the damping and wound the spring up to the right setting for my lardarse body and hey presto it was fabulous!! Would like to change compression damping too but the rebound damping adjustment works a treat. WAY better than the worn out original shocky!
Now to sort out the soft front end (sounds like my ex wife....). What weight oil are others using? I prefer it to be firm rather than soft (also sounds like my ex-wife....). _________________ K1100RS '97

I think a lot, myself included are using 10wt instead of the standard issue 7.5wt fork oil, some have even gone heavier as they are larger.
It's more of an experiment for you, your riding sytle etc, trial and error.
Try the 10wt and see how it feels. If it's not enough then go heavier. Or lighter if it's too much.
Make sure you use oil that is rated for motorcycle forks duty. I tried some that wasn't and had my seals leaking within a year.
I have 10wt in one, and 7.5wt in the other. I will go with 10wt in the other one this year as well. _________________ Ride safe.

I use Honda red 10 stuff on the recommendation of a friend and it seems to work well. Try filling about 10cc per fork less than recommended. If that's too soft then top it off. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Awesome, will do. Pretty sure I had 10 in the K100 and it felt great so will try it in this too.
Desperately trying to stop me buying this, won't see another one this cheap ever!! :-

Hi, Drikko,
A wise man once told me that the correct number of motorcycles in your garage is (the number now in your garage) + 1! Good luck in your decision, whatever it may be. _________________ Ride Safe,

Drikko - you don't indicate how many miles on your '97. I replaced the stock shock on my '97 at about 40,000 miles. I tried heavier oil in the front, but soon found that the springs needed to be replaced also. At 50,000 miles I replaced the springs with WP. If you've got many miles on that machine, you may have to replace the springs. _________________ Jim

It's only got about 37k klms on it. The Ikon shock had a new spring on it.
As to the front I notice that at a standstill I can push down on the forks and can feel it hit the higher rate springs. That seems too soft for me, but maybe not. Will ride it around a bit with the 10wt oil in first. Then if it's still too soft Ikon make some great progressive springs which I had in the K100 as well.
I'm using Ikon mainly as I can get them at dealer price ie the back shock was about 150 less than the retailers...and they're in OZ of course.
I had to wind the preload up about 10mm on the back shock to account for my lardarse weight. Feels SO much better. _________________ K1100RS '97

Drikko - I was talking about the front springs - sorry - I should have been more specific. When you make a change to the rear suspension, that can throw more weight on the front suspension. If heavier oil doesn't work, you'll likely need new springs in the front. _________________ Jim

Haha, no worries. Yep I think that's exactly what has happened. Saturdays project to change the oil in the front.
Cheers

Watch those fork drain screws. They are very easy to strip. If you are after a set of heavier fork springs, I have a set of Racetech ones here (replaced them with even heavier Eibach ones for 2up touring).
cheers,
