Gidday everyone, Have recently noticed an occasional rattle in the motor of my k1100. It only happens after giving the motor a hard rev while in neutral and then backing off sharply , on the road there are no noises,I,m thinking the starter clutch , if it is this can it cause major dammage if it fails or does it just stop starter working. It may not be the starter so if any one has any other suggetions let me know as I,m planning a fairly long run soon and don,t want to do a pull down straight away. Mick,
You mentioned that it does it in neutral.
But does it decrease/disappear if the clutch lever is pulled in as opposed to leaving the lever alone?
If pulling the lever in diminishes the rattle, I have the same thing (Phil Marvin sat at a traffic light and asked me about my bike's rattle)
Let us know. _________________ John & Cathy

No the rattle is not present all the time it's only after it has been revved quiet hard to say 8000 and as the revs drops back to idle there is a rattle that is only for a second and not uniform sometimes longer or shorter or not at all I think it might be the gear that the starter spins is getting wound up to a high speed on fast revving then is possibly getting slightly off balance as it winds dowwhich might mean the bearing it runs on is getting worn my current worry is I want to do a few long runs before I pull out the motor and was wondering if any one knows about this noise and if it could cause hassles in the short term say 5-6 000 ks thank Mick _________________ 92k1100 lt with sidecar. 93K1100 CAFE..86K75C.95 k1100lt |

One of the hardest things on a motor is to free rev it. Everything moves all around because it does not have a load on it. Beats the snot out of the bearings over time. Just my 2 cents.
