Are the police bikes set up mechanically any differently then civilian bikes?
Example: stronger drive shafts etc. _________________ 1995 K1100rs

Hi, Lexxol,
I have a K75RTP. I bought it in June of this year and, so far, have ridden it about 11k miles since I bought it. There are a few differences between my '95 K75RTP and my '95 K75RT. The RTP has a different wiring harness. It can take radio, siren, lights, etc., etc. Mine still has the wires and the switches for the police equipment still on the bike. My fuel tank has a ground wire connected to the frame. The fuel pump and the "brain" are both different - "shielded". The bike came from BMW with the European light switch (on/off headlight switch). The OEM spark plugs were Bosch XR5DC (resistor), not X5DC. The speedometer has marks every 2mph instead of every 5mph like the normal speedometer. The fairing braces (under the windshield, above the headlight) have a myriad of relays and whatever still zip-tied to them to go along with the still-attached wiring. The bike has a single seat and the radio box behind it and, as John will tell you, the radio box holds a LOT of stuff. The bike has no rear footpegs and no handle to help lift it onto the center stand. It does have both front and rear crash bars. The engine, gearbox, shaft and final drive are the same as the non-police version. My VIN ends with 744. Paul Glaves has a K75RTP with the VIN ending in 745. A&S BMW in CA is currently listing the RTP with VIN ending in 743. Theirs has 21k miles (mine had 15k when I bought it) and their "buy it now" price is $7297, not quite double what I paid for mine off e-bay in June. I hope this helps. _________________ Ride Safe,

Good morning Lexxol...
I dont know about "k" series bikes, Phil has the best explanation on that, BUT I can tell you that in the ate 70's and 80's when I lived in Germany, the town of Achern had a small "tuning" firm called Fallart that modified all police bikes at that time. My neighbor told me that every police bike had modified cams, modified cylinder construction and modified fuel delivery.. al o which was top security information. I suspect that the electrics were also modified to accommodate communications. I would travel the Autobahn daily in those days at routine 180kph and the 'green/white' Autobahnpolizei on their BMW R100 would pass me like I was in reverse... So maybe today the mechanics are not altered, but certainly the computer and other electrics are as Phil says !
best regards.....// Ernie-NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers
