How easy is it to fit another shock? Is it sufficient to make sure the overal sizes are the same or is there more to it? This probably sounds a bit dum, but just wondering what's important. Could you for instance fit a shock for a R1150RT into a K100RT, as the sizes seem the same. Thanks.

The length is important for fit. I replaced mine with a Wilbers. They sent me the wrong size the first time. It was for a different year than my 1991 K100RS. Once the right size arrived and installed, all was good. Then I rebuilt the front forks, seals, fluid, etc. Now the bike handles much better.

You can fit other non bmw shocks. Just make sure that what ever you get is designed to fit your year/model of bike, as skdonlan can vouch for.
There are very few "universal" shocks.

Thanks team, appreciate the info. I got a R1150RT spring quite cheap and even Beachcombers well received RAM shocks are more than twice the cost (by a margin). If I can get 40.000 out of it I'd be happy. I have a progressive on it now, but it seems for a lower weight than mine with bike.
Maybe should try to sell the R1150RT one and buy a K100 one. Hate to spent the money and I like to tinker a bit.........must be the heritage. Cheers, Rene.

I appreciate the sentiment Rene as my direct family heritage is Crawford !! [ self depracating Scottish mean-ass inference ].

Before you do anything potentially dangerous [ like fitting a non compliant shock ] - let me have a look at all the OEM shox I've replaced - if there's one good enough - I'LL GIVE IT TO YOU!

Not all were totally knackered - but were replaced with the you know what - well, because I could.

The bottom line Rene is that the shock is 50% of your contact with the road - don't compromise.

One point overlooked in the will it won't it saga - what is the pivot ratio that the shock is working at?

Am I correct in thinking the R1150RT shock mounts in the centre of the bike?

I know the Kay series mount on the driveshaft assembly.

Measure the distance [ relative to each bike ] from the pivot axis of the swingarm to the point where the shock mounts [ bottom ].

I am guessing that the Kay mount is waaaay back from the R1150.

That means the internal valving etc., is working under different external loads.

Realm have just started work on the RAM for R Oilhead series - and the internal requirements are completely different. I imagine this applies to OEM as well.

I agree with saving money in these hard times, but this is a safety issue - give it some serious thought before you commit.

Very happy with my RAM. I took the wife out for a ride this weekend after finally getting her some proper gear. At first I left the shock setting the same as I ride it by myself. There was way too much bouncing up and down, stopped for gas and added 4 clicks on the knob, didn't touch the preload, it rode awesome with two on board, nice and tight, but not harsh. Later I just backed it off the 4 clicks and I'm good to go.

Best money I've spent on my bike.

I have always been pretty well able to determine the condition of shocks or struts on cages, but what are the symptoms or ride characteristics of a worn out rear m/c shock?
