I recently acquired a K1100RS SE that has had some modifications. I want to get the K back to an SE, or at least as close as I can. However, beyond the black/silver paint scheme, I do not know what comprises an SE. Can someone provide a source for the information, both cosmetic and mechanical, or provide an accurate description of the differences between an SE and a standard RS. The year model is 1996.

Hi D - welcome to K11OG.

SE is Special Edition. What kind of mods have done to the bike?

There are any number of sites on the web with pictures of your make and model bike.

I don't think there were any mechanical differences, just the paint scheme, but someone please correct me if I am mistaken.

Welcome to the group D, this is a great place for all things K related.

Additional Powerlet socket in the dash.

Black swing arm and final drive.

Shiny fork lowers with Marzocchi lettering on 'em. (The pic below is a parts bike I bought - it's supposed to have a reflector there but that got bashed off in the accident.)

And red ones are still faster. Very Happy

The handlebars have been changed to something home-made, so the switches and ignition pad were removed. Those parts were unavailable when I purchased the K. The ABS was removed as well, and again, the parts were unavailable. A repaint was done, and in the process, all badges were removed.
I was familiar with the K as I owned an '85 K100RT. Rode it for almost 250,000 miles before the transmission gave out. That was in 1997. For various reasons I could not get another bike until now. I knew before I bought the K1100RS that the switch panel and ignition pad were missing. I was still interested in the bike and overlooked this particular flaw. A suggestion was then made that this particular RS was an SE and since then I have been curious what made it an SE, if in fact it was. There are some wires (not connected to anything) behind the triple clamp and I have no idea what they are for. One thought was heated grips - was this an option on the SE or standard? Since I want to get rid of the bars, I thought I would like to try the originals. If heated grips were standard, I would like to put those back as well.
Sorry for the length - just some of the thought process that led me to ask the question.
Doug

Doug,

It sounds like you have an extensive but interesting project on your hands.

Good luck.

Maybe OTG can "talk him down". Or do we need to do an intervention?

I'd tried to tell OTG a long time ago that some tape, time and a rattle can, then he could have had a BFD. Laughing

I have a 97 K1100RS SE with the same Arctic Silver/Black colour scheme.

My research indicated that the SE differences were limited to the two tone colour scheme and the polished forks.

My final drive/swing arm is silver. Engine and Gearbox are black

Is there a six speed box that will fit the K1100 then, would be very interested in that and to fine out what parts are needed, quite often I find myself trying to put mine into "sixth"

Johnny was joking. Don't believe him when he tells you his bikes have reverse either.

If you want taller gearing you could swap in a K1100LT final drive and have a 32:11 gear ratio instead of 31:11 or supposedly swap in the internal gearing from an R1200C final drive. I can't remember what gearing that is.

K bikes are high RPM engines. They can literally run all day long at 6,000+ RPM.
