Why does my rear wheel spin on startup in neutral?
I read an article in Cycle World that said that wet clutches bathed in oil sometimes transfer some rotational motion to the transmission when they don't disengage immediately during startup. Yesterday, after an evening of 2 degrees Celsius, my rear wheel spun for the entire 2 minute warmup. Clicking into 1st was smooth as ever, so I don't feel that my clutch isn't disengaging. However, our clutches are dry clutches so why is energy being transferred to the tranny?
Just curious. Thanks.

As per FD, perfectly normal, you'll note it spins at higher revs more willingly than when ticking over at 1000rpm.
Wet or dry clutches always create a small amount of drag creating the slowly spinning rear wheel you have.
If you jacked up the drive wheels of your car and started it in neutral in most cases you'd get one of the wheels rotating just the same.
You'll note the drag is so slight a light touch will stop it too |

For you information unless you are holding the clutch lever against the handle bar when it is warming up the clutch will be ENGAGED driving the input shaft to the gearbox, the reason why the wheel rotates has NOTHING to do with the clutch at all, it is because of drag caused by the oil in the gearbox, when the engine has been running for a few minutes the oil warms up enough to make it a little bit thinner and the drag decreases and the wheel stops.
The drag talked about with a wet clutch is what causes the CLUNK when engaging first gear.
