Klinker and Bro made it out west a couple weeks ago.

First night's campsite: Near Billings, Montana with the Yellowstone River in background.

Lolo Pass.

Downstream.

Camping at Dworshak State Park, Idaho. Reservoir (difficult to see) in background.

Five miles east of Lewiston, Idaho: "WTF was that weird vibration I felt from the rear wheel?..."

Uh-oh.

A little incontinence issue. All that engine braking coming down from Dworshak must have taken it's toll.

"AAA? I need a tow."

Towed to U-Haul at Moscow Idaho. Lucky to find one open on a Sunday afternoon. Now to wait for Sis to arrive with SUV while Bro rides ahead...

Next day in Seattle.

DUCK?!!

FD's out crabbing, but when he returns, he proclaims that he's not only got tools, he has a couple final drives: a stock 31:11 and a 32:11. Hmmm. I've often thought I'd like a little taller gearing, so I went for the 32:11. No bargain (this is FD, after all Wink

), but better than taking the toasted final drive to Ride West for a rebuild. Besides, I had that MF'n BFD rebuilt just 20,000 miles ago - not too confident in trying that again...

Duck and I were planning to meet anyway to calibrate the speedo and have him install the instrument cluster LED upgrade. He showed up with the tools and new rear brake pads and we dug in.

Installing the LED's. Upon reflection, I maybe should have withheld the Red Hook ESB compensation until after the job was done - might have avoided the fried relay. Shocked

After the wrenchin' and an ESB while relaxing in the hot tub...

Thanks, Duck. For the Dungeness and emergency roadside assistance. Yeah, I gotta' give ya' grief about your parts prices, but without your help, we would have been stuck, "driveless in Seattle" for another day and would have missed:

Deception Pass is a must-stop.

Gorge Dam, Washington.

Camp supper.

Campsite at Curlew Lake State Park, Washington.

Pend Oreille River, Washington.

Camping at West Glacier, Montana.

Going to the Sun Road, Glacier National Park, Montana.

Jackson Glacier in Distance. Of the estimated 150 glaciers that were in this area a hundred years ago, only 27 remain. They're predicted to all be gone by 2030. Get out and see them while you can.

Total trip: 3838 miles, although 300 of them were with the RS on a trailer. Bro had over 4200, coming from Minnesota.

mother earth has lotts o stuff for us to see and enjoy... its good to see the worlds most eloquent mototouring motomachine rolling in its element...

WOW!! Neat story, happy ending, whata trip! Whata deal!

I was thinking of lubing the final drive this winter, almost 40K but all shifts well and the bike runs sweet.

Maybe I'll just ride to Redmond next July and see if I can get an appointment at the Drakes.

Nice to know when your out far from home, help can be closer than you think.

Trying to sell the wife on letting me loose for 2 weeks next year. MOA nats and Hungee Dungee trip rolled into one.

I'll start on her after the holidays, wish me luck!

I know she is welcome, opposites attract.

Me: I like road trips, I scorch 1,000 mile days when needed, then do it again. I sleep in apple orchards of where ever when ever I am tired on the road. Camp when on the road mostly. I can live on Gatorade, Slim Jims & Cheese curds all of which really don't need refrigeration to last a couple days. I travel pretty light.

Her: roughing it = slow room service. Sleeping out side is for boy scouts & other smelly animals. She will eat fast food, but only a fast salad. Needs coffee with half & half before even thinking about looking outside and I must supply this or the rest of the day is not nice. She has taken short rides, about an hour, and that's the limit. Her positives far out weigh these minor inconveniences, but she's just not road trip material. And although she let's me go cause she know's I'll come back, while I am away, she has to make her own coffee & she hates that.

BTW, this is all true, no BS.

Nice ride report. Too bad about the final drive, I always thought that these drives on the classic K's were bullet proof. I change fluid on mine, when its running, every 20k.
