Hmm. I'm going to be in Orange County next Sunday. Maybe I should bring a wad of money. Johnny O... Think I'd like this one more than my LT?

I sent the guy an e-mail asking for additional pictures.
Do I want an RS? Or will I even have a chance to buy one since Johnny seen it first?
I do kinda like the styling a little more than the LT. I use my trunk bag a bunch. I'm wondering if I'd really miss that in the RS?
I've got a bunch of vacation time in October so I could ride it home to Colorado at that time. In the meantime, I'd happily pay Mr. Duck to give it a complete going over.
If this could happen, my 1996 LT will be for sale next spring. I plan on making a project out of making it perfect this winter. It's got 23,000 miles on it. Anybody want an LT for whatever I'd have to pay for the RS? |

I just realized that this is in San Diego. Not going there this weekend, but I could get out there and back on Friday... I fly for free so it'd just be an investment in time.
Anybody available to help me give it a short pre-buy inspection?
Hmmm. |

Just buy the farking thing already. At 6k if it's never been dropped it should be a pretty nice ride. Ask for pictures of the sides of the mirrors.
As those miles your biggest risks are probably the brake master cylinders and the clutch nut O-ring.
If you want you can keep the rack and top case from the LT and move it over.
My dad's place is in Rancho Mirage, not too far away from SD. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

How much have you talked to the guy, Johnny? If not for your spending freeze, would you buy it?
Aside from the physical appearance of the bike, are there any reliable methods to determine if it REALLY only has 6K miles on it? The service records should show some history, I suppose.
Any specific things I should watch out for? I'd probably go look at it, buy it and then leave it with the seller until I can go back to pick it up next week. I'm off from the 29th through October 7th. That ought to be enough time to make it home from San Diego, right?
I kinda like having low-mileage semi-collectable things. As you mentioned when I posted pictures of my LT, I'm a bit OCD about making everything perfect.
If this bike is as nice as they claim, I'll probably buy it.
I'd definitely appreciate any advice the group can offer. I've traveled coast to coast and border to border by car several times, but haven't gone further than about 300 miles from home by bike.
I suppose I should charge up my iPod and buy a good set of headphones to wear under my helmet. I don't have proper pants, either. I suppose that would be a good thing to have for a road trip. How many miles do you guys cover in a day? I'm fairly comfortable with 800-1000 miles a day by car.
So many things to consider. |

we just been dickering by email... i know nothing more than what the listing says...
there is no better motobrick than the bugeye motobrick... so after i got over my initial infatuation with the listing... i now find myself with no desire to mess around with another moto with my present employement situation...
im thinking the thing to do is take a close look at it and try to track down the previous owner and see what they say about it...
all i do is ride... top it off with oil... keep air in the tires... duct tape and zipp tiee and bungee the parts that look to be falling off...
perhaps the techno folks here can tell you what to look at...
if you are gonna ride it back to colorado... im thinking you need the whole kit... heated gear and rain gear included... you could do it in 2 days... but i would take 4 and ride the cool ch1t...

Rod - take a look at the tires - the last four digits of the DOT # (in the box) are the month and date of manufacture. Everything I've read lately recommends not riding very far or very fast if the tires are more than five or six years old.
Take a very bright flashlight, unscrew the oil fill and look in the engine. Shiny = good. Sludgy = bad - although I can't imagine that would be the case with such low mileage. Take a good look underneath for oil leaks.
Like Drake said - there isn't a whole lot that could be wrong with it. _________________ Jim

Hi, Rod,
Look at the rear brake pedal. If it only has 6k miles, the front outside points should still be sharp. Check the tire codes. If they're 3-digit, they are pre-2000. As such, they are good rim protectors, but not much else. (Says a guy who bought a '95 K1100LT with under 5k miles in 2005 in Tulsa, OK and rode it home to El Paso - on the original, 10-yr-old tires. But they had no cracks.) _________________ Ride Safe,

Take a look up underneath at the white plastic surrounding the tail light bulb. At 6k there should be minimal discoloration. Take a look at your LT before you go as a gauge.
The wheel rims should look brand new almost too.
It's listed as "always a California bike." In general this is a good thing BUT if the bike has lived on the coast then there's a lot of salt in the air that can cause corrosion. Check bolt heads and so forth for rust.
How far can you go in a day? Riding a bike is much different than driving a car. If you're riding freeway then 350-400 miles is a good planning maximum. For 2 laners, 250-300 max is probably about right for planning purposes. Personally. I can do much longer days but that's after lots of touring and I'm fooking nutz anyhow. If you start felling tired/fatigued AT ALL, pull over immediately and stretch or whatever. If the bike still has a stock seat then, well, you'll see.
Here's a good list of pointers to check out on the IBA site. You're not going to be riding 1,000 miles per day but all of these things still apply anyhow:

I just called this guy. Seems a little shady to me. Sounded like I woke him up. Or maybe he's just suffering from a hangover?
The Odometer says 6,000 miles. The title says 30,000 miles. Hmm. "We could either just say 30,000 miles on the title or we could say 'mileage unknown'."
Pretty much a deal-breaker for me, but I've asked him to send pictures. If it's really nice it might be OK, I guess, but I'll probably wait for a true low-mileage bike with a more verifiable history.

So, in fact the mileage could be.............anything. Just because gauges were swapped once doesn't mean that they weren't swapped 2 or more times. Yeah the brake pedal and shifter could show wear, but parts ARE changeable.
But at least the ad was accurate- "6K MILES ON ODOMETER" _________________ John & Cathy

The price just went down to about $3000. Less if you consider the "shady" factor. Run the other way!
Edit: What are the odds that the NH delegation weighs in timulsameously? _________________ Jim
