|
|
Hey gang,
I know it sounds weird, but that's exactly the problem. The speedometer on my bike is working fine, but the tripmeter (and odometer) aren't turning. Twisting the 'reset' dial on the left of the meter cluster will turn the and reset the tripmeter, but it's not moving on its own when on the run.
According to the mech, the 'teeth' of the gears that turn the dials on the inside are broken and cannot be replaced. It seems the WHOLE assembly needs to be replaced, as in the whole complete meter cluster. Major ouch to the wallet.
Has anyone encuntered this problem with their K-Series? Is there a remedy?
Thanks in advance again
Chris

Hi, Chris,
Years ago I had an issue with my trip odometer. I would turn the knob and one set of wheels wouldn't reset. A complete new trip odometer was about $25. It still works fine at 146k miles. (I sold the bike 3 years ago, but talked with the owner last night.) Today, the same part, the trip odometer, is nearly $100. And if your problem is the trip odometer AND the normal odometer (but the speedometer works), it sounds like a problem in the instrument rather than an odometer. I know the signal is somehow split and goes to the speedo and the odo, but I don't know how and, more important, I don't know how to fix it. Good Luck! _________________ Ride Safe,

Chris, I have read on another list just within the last month about someone out there making replacement gear sets for the odo assy.
Now I just need to remember what list I read it at so I forward the info to you.
Like Phil said the issue could be electrical inside the isnt assy itself. _________________ Ride safe.

Have a look at these 2:
http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/speedo-repair1.shtml
http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/speedo-repair2.shtml
They don't specifically mention the odometer, but it's good coverage on taking the unit apart (all the 1100s had the later design anyway) and maybe you can see something while you're in there... the odo is an electric solenoid, so maybe something could be a visible bad connection or dried out grease...?

Well it didn't take me long to find it.
Here's the individual thread, the guy that repaired his lives in Australia.
http://f3.webmart.de/f.cfm?id=2385371&r=threadview&t=3581939#16609370
He didn't post where he purchased the gears. He did post a link to pics that he took while doing the repair so you can see what you need to look for.
If you split your inst cluster and know that the gears are bad I can p.m. him and ask him from whom he purchased the parts. _________________ Ride safe.

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply, I was poring over the links that you provided...thanks SO much for the help, I've checked out all the links, they're very helpful.
If I get a chance this weekend I'll get the meter removed and opened at the bike shop to check the gears inside. I don't think I should DIY this, something tells me I'll f*** it up for sure.
Will keep you updated on the progress! Again, thanks a bunch guys
Cheers!

Hahaha, yeah, that's very logical. But for someone who can f*** up a peanut-butter sandwich, I normally leave stuff like this to the pros...hahaha!
