OK boys and girls, (BTW, this is kinda' long)
The K I love to hate is back together (new clutch disc, "O"ring and rear engine seal) NO LEAKS!!!
Saltcreek and I did a short ride so I could show him the Kanc'. Bike feels good now that I am getting used to a clutch that REALLY engages- apparently it had been leaking onto the old clutch for a while......
Jim and I parted ways at the Bear Notch road and I went home to pick up SWMBO for an afternoon ride and dinner (our anniversary).
Almost immediately once Cathy and I hit the road a new problem surfaced- NO LAUGHING, OTG!!
The bike runs strong on acceleration and at almost all other times. But when I am in a higher gear and around 3-4000 rpms and feathering the throttle between accel and decel the bike is SURGING. Never felt that before.
Now just before the clutch job I sync'd the TBs. Or I should say I tried. I am using a 4 gauge setup but I could not get them to completely sync. On 2 cylinders I lightly bottomed the air screws but couldn't get those gauges to go any higher- the other two were the opposite.
I figured that this meant that a valve adjustment is due this winter, so I called it good and then went on the ride with Saltcreek. The bike felt somewhat smoother but DID NOT SURGE. It started once I had Cathy on the back (no weight jokes here- she will kill you and me)
ANY IDEAS??????
Is it similar to what j o went through a few months ago? http://www.k11og.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6469&highlight=surging
TPS? Leaky/cracked intake rubber sleeves? I am stumped.
Remember it accelerates hard better than ever.
This one might be my fault (?)
Thanks for ANY help.

Quite the change in tone there, John
This may seem like the obvious question but what happened when you booted Cathy off?

my issue was that when i was f ing with some under the tanks secret modifications pieces i got a piece of foam rubber onto the throttle cable...
once i looked at it i saw it and pushed it away with my finger and it has not happened again...

Ya' know- when I did the sync I had to move that rubbery heat shield piece to get to the TBs. Thought I had put it back correctly......
Maybe not.
Thanks for the heads-up, j o. And the crabby pictures.

OK, did a short ride without my lovely wife as passenger (ya' never know who is reading this stuff)
Surging is still there. If I get the throttle in just the right spot between accel and decel it almost feels like something is very quickly turning the ignition off/on/off/on.
But otherwise the engine is running great. No hesitation, no backfiring and strong going up through the gears. None of the surging if I am "on the gas"
Gonna' pull the left side of the fairing off in a little while.
I am suspecting the TPS. _________________ John & Cathy

You seemed sure it wasn't doing it when we rode. I just happened to pull my left cover off today and it looked like that heatshield piece had shifted so I crammed it back in but it seems like it would be easy to get it interfering with throttle movement. Can ths be duplicated at a stop on the centerstand? _________________ Jim

Does it matter what rpm's your running at?

It would be worth looking at.

Wait, it was off when we rode, no problems. When did you put it back on? You could have goobered something up when you put it on.
As an aside, why is the spell checker willing to accept "goober" and even "goober ed" which you have to assume is short for "goober education" but not "goobered"? I'm not complaining, I don't know how I'd survive without it but sometimes... _________________ Jim

FIXED
Remember that I couldn't quite get the TBs sync'd?
Today once I pulled the left side of the fairing and hooked up the gauges the non-sync'd situation still existed. No interference with the rubber heat shield.
So I listened and also put my fingers around the intake. Found it-
Air leak.
Cylinder #1- the narrow hose clamp attaching the rubber "boot" from the TB to the cylinder head was loose- took 2 full turns to snug it up. #3 took nearly a full turn. Then I backed off all 4 and wiggled the TB bank downward to make sure they are fully seated. Then I tightened all 4. Done.
Hey- the TBs now sync. And the surging at speed is gone.
I have never touched these clamps so I'm letting myself mostly off the hook. Guess they worked loose over time.
Not going to jinx myself by saying how the bike is now running.
End of story- but check your intake boot clamps! _________________ John & Cathy

Good to know you got the problem sorted. Hopefully you won't have any more issues with the brick - other than pennies to maintain maintenance... _________________ Jim

Jim- when we rode together on Saturday I had the bottom of the fairing off. To get to the TBs, the bottom and the left side of the fairing need to be removed.
But we'll see how it behaves today. Not saying ANYTHING else...... _________________ John & Cathy

HEY, since I currently have no problems with the brick (probably just put the "whammy" on my luck) I can talk about the avatar.
The avatar is titled Lobster Man from Mars. An obvious updated forgery of the classic lowball movie by the same name:
Believe me, I have been looking everywhere for an image of someone in a lobster costume riding a motorcycle. Wonder why I can't find one
"Squids", yes. Lobsters, not a one.
Too bad we aren't having rabbit stew:

AARRGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
THIS P.O.S. is gonna' put me over the edge.
Surging worse than ever. Anytime I am "feathering" the throttle between accel and decel it feels like the ignition is being switched off and on rapidly.
If it was running halfway decently I would trade it in tomorrow. PERIOD. _________________ John & Cathy

It could be the ignition switch. You could try hotwiring the bike at the ignition connector to see if that eliminates the problem.
Or if you want to pay shipping I could send you one to test with. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks for the offer. That will definitely be on the list.
Funny thing is that under acceleration, even over rough pavement, the bike is really strong. It feels like an electronic control and/or F.I. issue. _________________ John & Cathy

You might want to check those TB fittings for air leaks, especially those little rubber caps that cover the vacuum nipples.
Can you reproduce the surge with the bike on the centerstand??

Had them off a couple of times for the TB sync. They seem OK. I substituted the tip of my thumb for each, one at a time- no difference in idle speed.

No, I does not
I did a ride today and stopped several times to do very small adjustments to the TPS. Going clockwise made the bike run much worse. Trimming it CCW did not seem to change anything.
Guess I need to look at injectors next. But I don't know if no/low throttle conditions would be exacerbated by a bad injector.
Gonna' go look at a late model LT tomorrow. CUSHY...... _________________ John & Cathy
