A quick question for you fellow k folk that have done this modifacation .Having heard that the k1100 runs cooler with a 3 core I recently got hold of a k100 rad off ebay only to find on arrival its only a 2 core , looking at the top and bottom tank there is room for a third row its even got the small indents where the extra row would be, and yes its definatly off of a k100 as I saw the bike it came off. Is there any particular model or years that had the 3 core.Only reason I can think of is the bikes shipped to Australia had diffrenences to the U.S models Cheers from downunder aus brick mick _________________ 92k1100 lt with sidecar. 93K1100 CAFE..86K75C.95 k1100lt |

Good Morning Ausbrick,
There is year when BMW switched from the 3-core to the 2-core on the K100 model. It was the early K100 models that got the 3-core and the one I bought also on "flea bay" was advertised as a "early k100 radiator". I don't recall the year where they switched.
I just did the mod on mine and there was a change to the temps. Not a big change but enough to reflect on the gauge. The next mod is going to be the manual fan switch. I hope you didn't spend too much on the radiator. You can always turn around and sell again at least. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

Thanks for that moondog, I will make sure the next one I get is a 3 core as I really want it to run a little cooler in the summer ,its my only dislike being an lt I tend to cook in the hot aussie summers behind the fairing. I am looking at making a cut down fairing for next summer.Last summer I turned it into a naked with a temporary headlight mount with just the screen, worked well as far as keeping cooler went but it was a bit ugly, also makes it handle and respond alot better there's alot of weight in that fairing, looking around for an old top half lt fairing to cut down as i dont run the bottom half any way . I must put up some photos when it s done. cheers mick _________________ 92k1100 lt with sidecar. 93K1100 CAFE..86K75C.95 k1100lt |

Mick,
I have been thinking about doing the same thing- but trying my K-RS with the bottom and side panels off.
Can't remember if the upper part will be sufficiently supported with the sides off. Have to take a look.
But heat hasn't been a problem here this summer- it doesn't seem to want to stop raining!!!
Good luck,

Hi John, I have rode my bike without the side and belly fairing, there is enough support. You showed some interest in the 3-core on another thread of mine. It was successful and the 3 core radiator cools it off probably 10-20 degrees. I don't know if that makes a big difference but it is something. Next I am going to do the manual fan switch.
And I agree with the rain. We can't seem to get two days of sunshine. I am going to a wedding today and the reception is in a big field with a tent. I hope the rain holds off. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

Not sure about the 1100 but I used to run my k100 rs without the bottom and the mounting was fine. Cheers Mick _________________ 92k1100 lt with sidecar. 93K1100 CAFE..86K75C.95 k1100lt |
