the old girl has started giving a slight cough on acceleration in 4th / 5th. It's usually just a single objection before getting on with the job. Any thoughts? Like to sort it before it gets worse...

Make sure your plugs are tight in the head. Mine had a similar problem and it turned out 2 of the plugs were hand-loose.

My sixpence...Check your harness connections at the Motronic, the TPS and the EFI, as well as the fuel pump, Fuel injectors and hall sensor. Clean them, and coat them with dielectric grease. That's usually the cause, unless it IS loose plugs.

Ok.. checked the plugs and the plug leads, all ok though the plugs were looking a bit black. unusual since I only changed them for the first time in nearly 3 years a few weeks ago...
Then checked a few connections - the ones I had the confidence to attack.. Nothing amiss and no change. In fact, I had a couple of runs with a serious 3 cylinder thing going on. Sounded and performed just like a plug out. Also some smoke.
As I was having a new rear tyre fitted by Garry Webb, I though I'd just check with him to see what he thought if could be. He took it for a blast after finding no faults on the blinking light thing but on return announced that it was probably the fuel delivery valve. 2 hrs of labour, digging behind the air filter, got a new one in and the bike is like new! Fuel consumption has gone down dramatically (used to have to fill up at around 130, now 170 and the light's not on yet), the pulling and smoothness are exceptional, no backfire on overrun - all in all, a miracle! I realise that this valve must have been failing for quite a while, lifting the fuel consumption and reducing performance but too slowly to notice. In fact I think it's been failing since I bought the bike judging by the mpg improvement.
So if you are having backfires occasionally or low mpg (my first clues) might be worth checking the fuel pressure. GW did that by attaching an oil pressure gauge inline.
All the best from a very happy hirschhs!
