Well I finally received my K100 radiator that almost got shipped around the world to get to Vermont. I bought it on flea-bay from a gentlemen in New Jersey. He shipped it on the 11th of June and it got here, in Vermont on the 27th, via Philly, (Richmond, Caifornia) to Massachuetts and then finally getting here yesterday.
Sixteen days from NJ to Vermont. I am sure I could have walked it up here faster! Bum leg and all. I would be weary shipping via USPS, parcel post. Good thing I wasn't in a hurry for it.
Well the second part of the story is the initial fit. So far it looks like it won't fit. The fan motor cover needed trimming to get it in to position which fits ok. But the radiator screen/fairing assembly isn't going to fit unless I start cutting and chopping fairings. I am not ready to do that yet.
The radiator pushes the screen/fairing too far forward and the forward screw holes don't line up. And if I were to make those fit, the side screws holes wouldn't line up
For those that have put a K100 radiator in the K1100LT I would like to hear how yours fit and what had to be chopped, if anything.
Well I guess there could be a third story too. I took the belly fairing off and found a dead burnt bird of some sort. I remember my last time out, a bird flew in front of me but didn't see where it went. I do now. It must have gotten sucked into the forward holes in the belly fairing.
Anybody catch a bird there yet? _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

NEVER use parcel post.
I caught a robin at 80 with the crash bar on my LT.

Moondog,
I am in the never did it dept.
BUT- I am VERY interested in how it improves heat removal.
My K-RS is getting closer all the time to being GONE. It is barely tolerable on a day like today- cool and light rain. Get a hot and sunny day and it stays in the garage.
Lemme' know.
Thanks,

Are you putting the radiator in an RS or an LT? If it's an RS and the '96 is the same as the '93, which I would think it is, you shouldn't have to cut or change anything with the fairing. I used the instructions provided by Gary Bennett on this forum, and I had no issues. There is a spacer on the upper middle bolt that needs to be re-positioned, but other than that, the only modification is to the cap on the back of the fan and cutting one of the fan brackets. The cap needs to be cut like you have already done. The instructions suggested using tape to enclose the modified cap, but I made mine out of fiber glass. _________________ Jeff

Yes it is a 1996 K1100RS. Whether it is the same as the 1993 I don't know.
When you said re-position the spacer do you mean remove it?
Everything fit fine before I tried to put on the radiator screen/fairing. I just couldn't get it far enough back to pick up the forward screw holes.
And I suspect the side screws wouldn't line up to the side fairings. I didn't try to remove the spacer. I think that would give me enough space to fit the screen/fairing.
BUT I have it all back together with the K1100 radiator so I'll have to try next time it is apart. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

When I put my k100 radiator in my LT I did not have to cut anything. I put the space in the top bolt on the front side of the radator to take up the extra lenght of the bolt and the fairing pieces fit fine. _________________ Rich

Well there must be a subtle difference between the LT and the RS. With the spacer in the fairing was not going to fit. I even stripped the screen off and no-go. Next time I'll put the radiator in with out the spacer, if that can be done. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

With the 2-core radiator, the spacer is placed between the radiator and the frame. This pushes the thinner radiator forward. When you install the thicker 3-core, you put the spacer in front of the radiator. This way you can use the same mounting bolt. The top radiator tab is now touchinig the frame and the front of the radiator is allowed to sit further back. Since the 3-core is thicker, the front will be in the same position as the 2-core. It also causes the fan to sit back a little further, allowing the plastic cap on the back of it to contact the airbox. That's why the modification to the cap is required. _________________ Jeff

Well that explains all. That would give me enough room to fit the forward screw holes on the fairing/screen. I didn't bother trying because I thought it was there for some purpose. DUH! Well now that I am unemployed again!...I got lots of time to try it again. Anybody looking for a technical writer? Thanks for the help _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!

Well I have installed the 3 core radiator in my K1100RS. I should have found Mr. Bennett's instructions but it is in.
Took it for a ride today with ambient air temp at 84 degrees. The temp use to run a needles width over the 2/3 mark and the fan would kick in at the red mark. Now it is running mid-way between half and 2/3 and the fan is still kicking in at the red mark.
I don't know what temps the marks are equivalent to but I would say it is probably a 15-20 degree improvement. It was a straight forward install except for triming the fan motor cover. Everything else fell into place and it is running ok.
Next maybe the manual fan control mod. _________________ "Badges? We don't need no stinking badges"!
