I am unaware of such a kit but would be interested in it. I tried to install a jack that would also interrupt the speakers on the radio in my tractor cab and finally gave up because the output required for headphones is apparently way different than that for speakers. I'm betting someone here knows how to do it. The jack is available at Radio Shack.

They are really hard to find. A lot of dealers don't even recognize the p/n that is in the radio manual. It took me about a year to find one. It was NOS from Re-Psycle BMW parts in Lithopolis, Ohio 614-837-1160. The p/n is 64141467296 and it was $40.83 back in 2007. At the time it was the only one they had. You may be able to find one at a wrecking yard.

I had talked to some audio guys about tapping into the speaker wires. They told me it is not so easy to do as the BMW uses a floating ground on the audio system. StarCom makes an isolated adapter to tap into the speaker wires to connect to their comm system. You can also use this to drive earbuds. There is a dealer for them somewhere on the east coast I think. Google is your friend.

All that being said, you are going to get tired of that crappy factory radio. Replace it with something nice that has pre-outs so you can hook your earbuds or comm system to it. Go for a CD that will play MP3 discs and don't forget to get USB input so you can use your IPOD.

One of the easiest things to do is use a cassette adapter. The plug end fits into an Ipod, XM/Sirius, etc. Pretty sure it's input only though, no output.

Yea, I tried one of those. They are input only to the radio. Sound quality was really sucko.

I just soldered a female jack onto the speaker cables and attached it on the back of the plastic near the r h speaker. Plug h phones into that directly.
No problem, all works perfectly.
Except that my radio has packed up but that's another post!

Could we have more detail? Does it interrupt the speakers or piggyback on?

I wonder if that has something to do with your radio taking a dirt nap? The audio guy I talked to said that you had to have an isolated connection because of the floating ground in the radio. You have to understand, I don't know jack about this, just passing on what I was told.

it interrupts the f speakers but for me that's ok as I find them pretty useless over 30 mph in any case!
