Does anyone know what the differences would be in output in the various K bike engines , the Scorpion has a 1990 16v engine which I think is out of a K1 whats different from a K100 to K1 ? Has the latest version of the K1200 the highest power output is the RS a stronger engine than the LT say ? What final drive has the highest gearing ? (as the Scorpion with the smaller rear wheel redlines easily in top gear) If I am looking out for a crashed K to transplant whats my best powerplant , I know ill have to retain the 5 speed box but is a 1200 a direct bolt on , any swapmeisters out there ?
Thanks for your wisdom !

You will be limited to the K100 and K1100 range of powerplants for a transplant.
K1100 is the obvious choice with larger capacity. You will also have to select the correct fuel injection system to go with the engine.
Does your Grinnall have Paralever rear end?
Either way the RS range have the highest gearing.
I have access to several K100 and K1100's being broken - engines, gearboxes and rear ends - including some RS versions.
Based in the UK

The highest geared final drive is from a RXXXXC (cruiser). I believe they are 2.54/1 and I don't believe they will mount right up but you can pull the ring and pinion gears out an swap them into your housing. Here is a link to some one on the list who did just that and got good results.

Hi, Bill,
Both my '95 and '96 K1100LT's had 33/12 (2.75) rinal drive ratios. I believe that was the highest ratio which came in the K1100 bikes.

Thanks for your replies I was under the impression that the 1200 engine would bolt on to the older type 5 speed gearbox ? The Grinnall has a paralever rear end and uses the mounts on the gearbox so the swingarm system of the 1200 frame cant be used . I am thinking of looking out for a power plant with a bit more poke! so am trying to figure the best choice ?
Hello Phil ( Go n'eiri an bothair leat ) if I am out in Maddocks I will pass on your greetings I live near Enfield on the old N4 road to Galway but I need to order some BMW bits soon and I may call out to Bray as I have never been there!
Regards

I think the Grinnall turbo with 275 bhp and weighing 390 Kg/860 lb was a bit insane I think it was crashed and written off my Scorpion has a 17 year old 100bhp K1 engine and I was going to look out for a newer donor engine from a later larger K to replace it but I am trying to figure what to look for and what will fit over the last couple of years this site always give good advice and has plenty of knowledgable posters
Regards

Hi, Bill,
Never having done it myself, I have no firsthand knowledge, but one of the frequent posters of a year or two ago did put a K1200 engine in his K1100RS. I don't know the details, but it ran and, I understand, quite well. I believe he used the K1100 injection, exhaust, etc. I don't know if he used a K1200LT (100hp) or K1200RS (130hp) engine. But, it HAS been done and someone has to have some details. _________________ Ride Safe,
