I tried to start the bike up at the weekend and had left it too long due to a recent ( another one! )back op. My mate then tried to charge the battery without disconecting it and the charger blew! I got the RAC out to help start it and when the guy tried to charge it with a jump pack the bike was trying to start in spite of the no keys being in and the ignition switch on off. He reckons that the solonoid on the starter is faulty but I dont know and fear we may have done something more serious to it! Any suggestions as to what we've done and would it be an expensive thing to repair?
Any help appreciated!
When I do get it repaired I will be getting a trickle charger fitted!!

The starter relay contacts have welded shut. Smack the right rear corner of the relay box with a wrench or something. Sometimes that will free the contacts.

If that doesn't work then you need to replace the starter relay.

Duck is right, I have done the self same thing, but without the back op.
Disconnect the battery, give it a good long charge, if there is a big spark or the starter spins when you try to reconnect, the solenoid is still stuck. I would lift the rear of the tank & IIRC I used a 10" extension to give the solenoid a good slap. Try reconnecting, should be OK. For some reason, tis quite common on K's.
BTW have you shown yourself in the UK & ROI thread?

Sounds like a starter relay. If the battery is low it will toast the relay. It has happened to me in the past.

A huge thanks to everyone!
I tried using the wrench technique and it worked! Been out for a long run and its going great. The ABS light is flashing all the time but guess its cause the battery was dead and it will have to be reset when I get it serviced.
Thanks to all that replied to my post.

Do a search of the Tech Stickies. It's simple enough to reset an ABS. ABS1's trip with monotonous regularity. Report back, we'll all help.
