|
|
Well i have just searched 6 pages looking for tips on how to remove the gas tank.
both the OEM and clymer manuals are non discript.
can i please get your tips and hints so that i can compile an attack plan.
i have needed to remove the tank for a while but i am apprehensive .
i owned a cx500 and could remove the tank in under 2 minutes using just a socket wrench.
thanks _________________ fix the problem not the blame ; fix what is messed up ; NO one is to blame. |

When my heated grips tried to burn my LT down I had the tank off in about 15 seconds. The guy I was meeting to sell some gear was quite impressed. Guess I was MOTIVATED by the smoke coming from under the gas tank.
I'd recommend running the fuel level down pretty low before doing it. Makes the tank lighte rand less chance for it to piss gas all over.
There's two posts at the rear of the tank where it mounts to the frame. There are C-clips on them. Pull those back off with some needlenose pliers. Then pull the rear of the tank straight up. It can be stubborn if it hasn't been done in a while. If so, take a piece of 1x4 lumber and gently pry it up.
If yours doesn't have a cup, you'll also need to pull the vent lines off of the rear of the tank before your pull it back.
Then you can pull it straight back. Undo the hose clamps at the front left. Remove the fuel pressure regulator return line first - the forward one on the left. (Iif it's been run recently there will still be pressure in the fuel system so you should let it sit for a while after running before doing this - either that or turn your head away.)
Then disconnect the line to the fuel rail - the rear line at the front of the tank. Be prepared to put your finger over it as it will leak gas. Place a towel on the ground and lean the tank up against the wall - otherwise it will drip out of the second line. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I think what you want is quick disconnects - like this: http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=47556
or this: http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=1552
Except those seem a little pricey - I think they're probably considerably cheaper from McMaster-Carr - but I can't find the info I have on those. I hope someone who bought from McMaster-Carr will chime in here with the info.
I need to get a pair of disconnects, also. If you get disconnects, remember install one female to male and the other male to female so you don't get the hoses mixed up. _________________ Jim

Also remember to get the viton o-ring and not the Buana rubber. The viton is made for harsher chemicals, the buana rubber will swell up with the gas and be impossible to get apart(mmmm how do I know this).
This is where I got mine. You need to order the four pieces seperate.

When I disconnect the lines off mine I loop them back so they are both "closed off".
I disconnect the front line off the fuel tank(from the fuel regulator) then connect it to the fuel injector rail.
Same with the pressure line (rear line on the tank) disconnect it from the fuel rail and connect it to the front stub of the fuel tank.
Saves some leakage and helps prevent getting dirt into the system. _________________ Ride safe.

Just my .02:
Since I'm ALWAYS futzing with my bikes I've considered getting quick disconnect but in the end decided it was just one more thing to fail and at the prices some places charge.....
Since, unlike the 2Vs, the four valve Ks has some slack in the fuel lines the only time I ever remove the fuel lines is to clean the gas tank annually to make sure there's no water in the bottom corroding the seams. Aside from that I can pull it back and rest the rear of it on a stool next to the bike. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Rich - did you get plastic or metal? You told me once, but I forgot...
What size is the gas line? (I might as well ask the stupid question - save someone else the trouble). _________________ Jim

The size is 5/16" and these are brass. The ones from A&S are zinc and not as strong. I actually have one of the zinc ones on my bike because I bought that first before I found the brass ones. I will probably pick up another brass one since I don't think the zinc ones are as well made.
I had the plastic ones and they are worthless. I had both break removing them. This is where I also realized that they were sent with buana rubber and not viton. _________________ Rich
