So, how come no one has jumped on this?
| Quote: | | This tire is almost new; it was purchased in November 2008 and has less than 500 miles on it. Hence, the tread is almost perfect. Unfortunately, it has a screw hole right in the center of the tread (see arrow on picture). Since initially I could not find anybody who would fix it for me I wound up having to buy a new tire. Only after doing so was I informed that the same BMW dealership actually sold a tire plugging kit which was unofficially endorsed by the staff (Quote: “almost everybody here rides on plugged tires”)… The end result of this slightly embarrassing episode is that now I have an extra quite roadworthy rear tire on my hands (which was plugged under supervision by the BMW guys) that now needs a new home. |
After all, everyone rides on plugged tires! _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!
Wait a minute- let me loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel of my wife's Subaru and send her off down the road.
R U NUTZ???
Plug it, seal it, nuke it. Anyone has to be STUPID to use this tire. But then again we have all seen the youtube footage of idiots wheelie-ing their passenger off the back of their CR-rockets. That would be the perfect market. _________________ John & Cathy

I think it would be OK if you patched it from the inside. I had a flat in The Yukon and couldn't find a tire. Had it taken off and patched at a tire shop. Rode about 800 miles to Fairbanks pushing triple digits the whole way - no problem.
Fix-a-Flat doesn't work on bolt holes.

I honestly think that it would be OK if properly PATCHED from the inside, not plugged. I certainly would not buy a bad tire and patch it but I might do that on one of my own tires.
There ARE people who will ride on plugs - I'm not one of them however. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I installed a mushroom plug two years ago on a California trip and am still riding on the tire.
A replacement tire is going on for this summer, but the plugged tire (nail) didn't lose any air in all this time. _________________ '93 K1100LT

I guess I'm stupid. Have been since swtching to tubeless tires in about 1981. I'll ride on a plugged tire but I have to know what made the hole. I wouldn't buy someone else's plugged tire. _________________ Paul - '93 K11/12RS (sold), 2002 R1100S BCP and '03 RC51 KOG 29 |

Quite right, What damage may have been done to the casing cords, was it a sudden deflation or a slow puncture? Tyres are cheaper than ones life, you cannot take a calculated risk unless you know all the facts. My manual suggests that the BMW supplied plugger should only be a "get you home" measure & that a proper galvanised repair should be done by a qualified person ASAP. But not IMHO on a tyre whose provenance is unknown. _________________ Regards Tim,
