Hey Guys, this might be a stupid question, but I'd rather be embarressed here than break something expensive on my bike.
My bike is currently up on it's center stand without a shock absorber while I await a replacement stock one from Scott A. Then I'll be geting a RAM.
Can I take the bike off the center stand, or will the rear end collapse from the weight of the bike without the shock on it? I need to move it around in the garage to change some fluids.
I'm not touching it until I hear it's safe to do so (or not).
Thanks _________________ Steve

Don't take it off the center stand without a rear shock
Not a stupid question! But it would be bad. |

Thought so, maybe I could make up a temporary brace from wood or something? _________________ Steve

Sounds risky to me.
Be sure to have your camera handy if you try it though. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Don't see why you shouldn't be able to make a steel brace from Dexion or Unistrut (English products that look like "big boys Meccano") that could use the existing mounts. Anything you use must not be able to slip out, as the weight of the bike IMHO will break either the swing arm or the gearbox.

Just wondering Why would you take it off the center stand..Maybe to move it somewhere else??
I would not . It will put your tire against your rear fender I would think.
Not a good idea, in my opinion, just my 2 & 1/4 cents _________________ In the words of the stones

Not the end of the world if that happens though - but it won't be rolling anywhere.
When I was riding my K75RT across bumf**k New Brunswick, the lower shock nut decided to depart without telling me. I did not disover it until exploring some knarly backroads where I hit a man-eating pothole that blew the shock off of the post and left the rear of the bike sitting on the wheel.
The bike being now "lowered" I was unable to deploy the sidestand. So I couldn't get off of the bike. I looked like a complete doofus trying to wave down the cars that came by while sitting on my bike. And it was a deserted unused road but eventually somebody pulled over and helped me get it on the centerstand.
Another fun day of riding..... _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Sorry about the mis post.
I have my stock shock from my 93 RS.
You can borrow it, then sent it back when you get the RAM.
Can you wait? If not PM me and I can send it out tomorrow. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

Thanks Drake!
Given WTF can happen in the garage moving bikes, falling this way & that, $10.00 be pretty cheap compared to the stuff that can get busted. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

Jim,
when I was trialing the RAM shox I got a bit blase about swapping shox.
On centre stand, car jack under rear tire and swap shock.
One day I put the "sump" on a block of wood instead of using the centre stand [ no I don't know either? ] and went through the routine.
All fine until the inevitable happened - tire slipped off the jack, bike slipped off the wood - instant Dragster! NO problems with seat height now, approx 18" !!!!!!
The good news is if anyone decides to copy my stupidity, is that the tire gracefully comes to rest on the underside of the mudguard without hitting anything important.
The fun bit was trying to get it all back up sufficiently high enough to complete the job.
I had to do it on my own, as I didn't want to call any of my buddies to show them how moronic I had been.
I did eventually make up a simple slip-in solid strut [ Dexion is WONDERFUL stuff! ] to save any future mishaps.
Every man should have some Dexion around - like that piece of string or ball of putty you used to have in your pocket as a kid!!
F Duck - that experience must have been real scary stuff - RAM shox come with Stainless steel NYLOCK nuts as part of the kit!
I think I'll double check the torque on mine before I go for my Sunday ride - you never know!

Brown should have it on his doorstep on Monday.
Steve, I figured you would wait to send the Ohlins until you had the the one I sent just for that reason. _________________ Ride safe.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions and warnings. Scott's shock ought to be here Monday, so no urgency. If I do anything, I might take the belly pan off and jack it up on my floor jack and roll it gently. I only need to move it off the wall a few feet. _________________ Steve

Use a heavy nylon strap to tie the center stand off to somewhere on the bike, I used the exhaust header, cold of course, so the stand cannot collapse JIC something happens. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!
