I know it's here somewhere but I can't find it. I'll be changing all the fluids soon, first time on my watch, and have bought Mobil 1 for the crankcase. I'm inclined to go synth for everything. What do others think and would it be a good idea to have a sticky on fluid options? _________________ Jim

I use Mobile 1 15W50 extended performace in the crankcase, Mobile 1 75-140 in the transmission and Mobile 1 75-90 in the final drive. I also add molybdenum disulfide powder to the transmission and the final drive for added lubrication. _________________ Rich

Why the heavier oil in the gearbox? Everything I've read calls for 80-90. What do you use for fork oil? _________________ Jim

If your tranny is notchier than a normal K transmission than the 75-140 will smooth it out a bit. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I have nothing to compare it to but it seems pretty smooth to me. If I miss a shift now and then I usually attribute that to a lack of focus. _________________ Jim

I use the heavier oil in the trans hoping it might stay on the surfaces better. I started out using the lighter oil in the fd and then changed to the heavier. I found that my fd was running hotter with the thicker oil so Iwent back to the lighter oil. Now that I am also using the moly I might go back to the lighter oil in the trans next change and see how that is. _________________ Rich

I use 15 wt fork oil because I'm 270 lbs seams to give me a smoother ride. _________________ In the words of the stones

I am using Honda SS-8 10w fork oil and seems to work for me. _________________ Rich

Hi,
I use Mobil 1 15w50 in the crankcase and BMW oil filters. I use synthetic 75w90 in the transmission and Castrol Hypoy 85w90 in the final drive. With all the final drive problems which have been reported, I'm going to use what BMW recommends. Remember, DO NOT put 4 quarts of oil in the engine. It WILL be overfilled. Put 3 1/2 qt. (with a new filter, 3 qt. if you aren't changing the filter) into the engine and go for a ride of maybe 10 miles. When you return, check the level and top off until the level is about at the middle dot, maybe slightly higher. I also use Autolite 4163 spark plugs and ff424 (or now, ff3424) fuel filters from Auto Zone. I use BMW 7.5 wt. fork oil. I currently use these in my 2 K75's, but I also used them (before the deer meet) in my 2 K1100LT's.

Phil:
There seem to be plenty of FD problems with other bikes but I think the 4V K FD's are pretty bulletproof.
I only use synthetic blinker fuild. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi, Drake,
Squeezed dead dinosaur blinker fluid is difficult to find. Where do you find the synthetic stuff? It must be frightfully expensive. Is it in the same area as muffler bearings and relative bearing grease?
See you at Hungry Dungee I!!!!

Huh?
I think from what I read in the Clymer the fork oil is the same stuff as the hydraulic oil I use in my tractor. Clymer also says 5w. _________________ Jim

That's part of "tuning" your suspension. With the front forks you can change the springs and fluid for your individual riding style and body wt.
Heavier oil wt can stiffen up the compression and rebound ability a little bit. Kind of like turning the screw from S to H on the stock rear shock. _________________ Ride safe.

Clymer = Book of Lies.
I think BMW fork oil is 7.5 - I could be wrong. I use 10W - I like a slightly stiffer suspension.
You're probably fine with 5W if you're very small. Hydraulic oil is likely OK, too. _________________ Jim

I use Valvoline Racing 20/50 in crankcase and Mobil HD 80/90 in gearbox an final drive. I think works fine.
In front fork Motorex 10, also fine with WP springs.
By the way couple of weeks here in Finland to start the season. _________________ Land of thousands of lakes - Finland |

Upon the recommendation of a fellow longtime K bike owner I use the Honda Red 10W oil. If filled to spec it jackhammers me on freeway cracks but found that loading each fork with about 10cc less than spec makes the suspension work great for me. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Yep 7.5 is the KLT recommended fork oil, never felt the need to change. We total 30 stones (420 Lbs) + _________________ Regards Tim,
