I removed my seals today (see below post, second reply) and found something very confusing. The fork seal was encased in grey silicone, above and below the seal! When I first removed the dust caps, I saw a squiggly silicone bead covering the snap ring and seal; I just figured it was a previous owner's terrible attempt at stemming the oil leaks from both legs.
Imagine my surprise when I found more silicone under the seal, and it was laid perfectly, almost like a factory job! Is it possible BMW or a dealer service tech used the silicone in the hopes of getting a better seal? BTW, the oil in the left leg was decent (bluish) but the other leg's oil was black/grey and stunk like cr*p! Waiting on my seals to close it back up...

I wouldn't think a certified service tech or BMW would have installed the seals with silicone sealer. I can envision a PO changing the seal him(her)self and putting a bead of silicone. It is NOT recommended to use silicone sealer on the fork seals.
