my k1100rs has over 100k on it. I have know Idea when the spline lube was done on my bike.
Is this something That the BMW dealer needs to do? or Is this something I can do myself? what spline are you refering to? How much should I expect to pay?? _________________ In the words of the stones

Transmission input splines. You need to take the whole rear of the bike apart. Since yours is a 93 with ABS I it won't be that bad. It's just all of the labor to take everything apart and put it back together. Figure a whole day the first time.
At a dealer it will run you $700-1,000 depending upon the dealer. LOTS of labor involved to put $0.80 of lube on the splines. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Keep in mind this price usually includes a clutch replacement as most decent mechanics will do the clutch when they are in there if the plates are close.
Shop around. I got a spline lube for 350ish from a private shop.
Would have stayed with them, it was a father-son duo that was a bicycle store that did motos and specialized in Beemers....but the son was a fkn tool with a big ego and bigger mouth and temper.
Too bad cause the father was the salt of the earth.
Like Drake said, if you have the space, patience and tools a spline lube is not hard to do.
For me time is a commodity I do not have much of so I have my mechanic do it. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

You should be fine. If you start having trouble downshifting then do it soon. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I ask him about the down shift qurik and he said It's done that from day one. he bought it brand new. sometimes when downshifting I have to release the clucth alittle and squeze and finish downshifting, happens between fourth to third. If I release the clutch between every gear no problems at all, It's only when I hold the clutch in while downshifting from 5 th to 1st it gets stuck between 4th and 3rd. weird huh? _________________ In the words of the stones

100K? Woof!!
Ok, I'm going to say a really ugly thing, so please bear with me.
I'll try to make the story short.
1. The 1993 K1100RS bought with 50K on it was my first BMW.
2. From day one it was an unforgiving bitch to downshift.
I learned to "pre-load' the shifter and how to avoid "false neutrals".
3. I was told "They all do that", both from the shop and other K-riders.
4. I paid for two spline lubes and for a while after each, it shifted buttery smooth.
5. I thought I just had to live with.
Then one day, I stripped the input shaft / clutch plate far from home with almost 100k on it.
Broke down for 10 days, I ordered a very low mileage Tranny and installed it with a new clutch plate.
It had NEVER shifted sweeter. It's as forgiving as a Honda and almost never, ever has false neutrals.
I'll try to post pics of what it looked like as soon as I can.
Now, here's the deal. Your options are as follows: IMHO
1. Deal with it until it breaks or you sale the bike.
2. Replace the input shaft. (Not for the faint of heart and might best be left for the shop mech., and it's not cheap.)
3. Spline lubes are a BIG deal the first time around but gets easier and faster each time. And I suggest a clutch plate replacement the next time it's done. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

I plan the next time I do a spline lube to take the time to document it very well with photos and 'talk thru' posts to help people new to this see the whole process.
Does anyone here think this would be of any value? _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

BTW, these are the "splines" you'll be lubing that are found on the input shaft. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

I thought spline lubes were only due at 30K. Are they instead due every 30k or 30k and 100k or what? _________________ "Still can't find 6th gear" 94 K1100LT |

I wouldn't believe anything a seller told me. When buying a used vehicle, I always assume I'm buying it AS-IS and that if there aren't problems I got lucky. That approach saves you much disappointment in life.
I wouldn't believe the "spline 2k ago" either unless there's paperwork to back it up.
There's only one way to be absolutely sure.
| Quote: | | sometimes when downshifting I have to release the clucth alittle and squeze and finish downshifting, happens between fourth to third. That sure sounds like dry splines to me. I'd recommend lubing them ASAC (as soon as is convenient) and see if that improves the situation.
I do not know if this is true or not but supposedly the 94 and on bikes have harder input splines. My personal GUESS is that 93s should be done at least every 20k or so. That's my approach on my 93 but if it ever starts giving me the false neutrals on downshifts I'd be much inclined to do it sooner rather than later.
Just my .02.
And of course some of this could just be you getting used to shifting on Ks. Ks are all I have ridden for just about all of my riding career so shifting a K right has most likely become second nature to me. Of all of the Ks I've had, I've never found the need to do the pre-loading thing.
Also, when shifting a K you need to really commit on the gear shift lever. Occasionally, when I get lazy, I'll still end up in a false neutral. You need to shift the lever with authority - but not FORCE it as that can lead to bending stuff inside the tran$mi$$ion.
Another thing that can help klunky K transmissions is running a mutli-grade gear oil - like Mobil 1 75-140. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks Flying Duck for the info.
It' might just me being to light/lazy on the foot.
It's my first k bike and I'm learning more about them everyday from this group, I will change the spline lube in near future if only for the "knowing it's done" will ease my mind.
BTW, I did'nt buy mine from a dealer, I got lucky and a friend flat out gave me the bike. he is the one who put the 100k on it. the odometer has not worked since I got it. but I have put alot miles on it already and plan on putting alot more
I'm just glad I have one _________________ In the words of the stones

As many others have said, the spline lube is nothing to be afraid of. It does take while, but if you are methodical it is pretty easy.
My two hints are...if you are going to change the clutch (Might as well as long as you are there), is that an impact wrench to get the nut off is almost mandatory. The manual says to replace the nut and the bolts to hold the clutch on, as they are both "one shot " deals.
Second, you really don't need a jack under the tranny to wiggle it out. I found that it only weighs about 40-50 lbs. It was easier to pull out by hand. Put something soft on the floor, and remember it is important to pull straight out until the clutch rod is clear, as it is easily bent. |
