When I took the tranny out, there was a 1 mm frame shim on the right frame attaching point. The left side had no shim(s) and when the bolt was removed had about a 3mm gap from the tranny. The frame was just "bent" in and the bolt tightened.

When I put the transmission back in, there is now no room for the right side shim? There is still a gap on the left side (2-3mm)

Should I loosen the whole frame, and then add shims as needed following the service manual?

A couple of photos of the "mess" Sorry some of the pics are out of focus.

Guess it gives a whole new meaning to "shit a brick"...

Anyway, we're not helping Joe very much with this thread drift.

Joe, I think you need to put it back together the way it was before you took it apart.

I agree with Jim- I would put it back together just the way it came apart.

But HOLEE CH!T- you got a whole bunch of putting back together to do. Hope you have lots of pictures or a REALLY GOOD memory.

BTW, there is an easier way to do a spline lube (just kidding!)

Good luck and post more pictures as your beast comes back to life.

It's hard for me to tell but, it looks to me like you are working with the paralever arm?

+1, I agree too, put it back the way it was.

OK, OK, I will start putting it back together....Body work is down at the body shop, I am doing all the body work.

I was thinking about it last night. I think I will loosen all the frame mounts and re-torque. Then I will shim the frame as needed.

Thanks for the input, yeah, I have lots of pictures.....

Has this bike been apart prior to your dismantle? If so, someone may have tightened every bolt as the went along, leaving a gap where the spacer was. All bolts should be in and the motor "hanging" normal before final tightening/torquing.

Interesting.

I've taken my share of K75s and K100s apart and done my share of spline lubes on those bikes. I've also pulled apart a parts K1100RS and done spline lubes on my LT. The only place I've ever seen a shim (every single bike BTW) is on the mount at the top of the bellhousing.

You noticed that wrench....so did I , I don't know how it got on my tool tray.

OTG just a quick shot of the painted rear drive.

Loosened all the engine mounts, as per the shop manual there is a 1 mm shim at the right front mount...then they get tightened in order, with the left front being the last to tighten, and shimmed as needed. It took a small (like 1/2- 1mm shim) washer. Close enough.....

Soon as the bike is back from the shop I am getting rid of it. Sad

The love affair is over.
