Put multimeter on battery 12.46VDC, started bike 11.81VDC, revved engine voltage did NOT change. When I put the bike back together after the spline lube did I forget something or break something or am I just that lucky? _________________ IBA#42211

Not to say what you probably already thought, but it sounds like you missed something at the alternator, or not tight, or dirty connection. _________________ Ride safe.

Mike - when you rev it up, if everything is working right, you should be seeing about 13.5 - 14.1. _________________ Jim

Hi
Does the charge light come on with the ignition and does it go out when it starts, alternators have to have 12 volts going into them via the warning light circuit to excite the coils before they will generate power, if when you did the spline lube (assuming you do mean clutch splines) you removed the alternator the smaller of the 2 wires might have been damaged or not connected correctly.
If the warning light doesn't come on then that is the problem. If you can get to it with just the ignition on put a volt meter on the smaller of the 2 terminals and to earth and check you have FULL battery voltage there and then on to the bigger terminal, same thing, FULL battery voltage there, if there is then you might have been unlucky and had the brushes wearing on the alternator and removing it had finished the job.
Do be careful probing around with a volt meter, if you short the terminal it will give a very nice juicy spark and could fry the alternator anyway.
Hope it helps

How'd you end up with this problem.
I just was experiencing a similar problem on my '95, was not charging enough. Though the dash charge light didn't indicate a problem.
I removed the alternator and dressed the slip rings, brushes, and the brush power contact point.
Now it appears to be working fine. Might explain why the old battery (june last year) was seeming to be week. _________________ Ride safe.
