Sorry again about my hijack on the 635hp thread. So I started a new one.
Also I don't want to start a this vs. that brand motorcycle battle, but....
I had a detailed discussion with the Ducati dealer (he was the one leading the shop ride last year). I have also known about high(er) costs of maintenance for a Ducati. He laid out what the costs would be for 6000 miles and 12,000 miles.
In the 7 months of riding season we have here, I managed to put 8000 miles on the K1100 last year- lack of time. And spent more than what the regular maintenance would be for the Duc. Sure, stuff could break- on either bike- but BMW parts prices aren't exactly cheap either.
Also, there will be a second bike- I will either keep the K or replace it with a UJM. So the mileage will be split between them.
But how can I resist that bike???

It's a beauty. Heated grips? Is that enough windshield to ride at 20 degrees? How far forward is the riding position? Would you outfit it with cases? What model is it- I couldn't find an 800 on the Ducati website?
May I ask how much you would be contributing to economic recovery if you took the plunge?

I had my '96 900 SS/SP for 12 years and 86,000 miles. I couldn't imagine bringing it to a dealer for the maintenance. I learned it myself and most always enjoyed doing it myself. I have had disappointing experiences with every place I have taken my bikes for maintenance, including my local BMW dealer.
That is why I have done my own maintenance for the last 38 years of riding.

If you can afford it, go for it. Do whatever blows your skirt up.
Hell, even if you can't afford it, do it.

This would be a slightly different approach to weather than a K- Ducati doesn't know what heated grips ARE. Guys who ride these in cooler weather typically use heater clothing liners
The average person might find it a stretch for the bars but I have a 35" inseam and my "wingspan" is 6'8".
Ducati doesn't produce SuperSports anymore. I am looking at two- one is a leftover and one lightly used with some upgrades.

Yeah I know.... Once I got past the big five-oh I started to realize that I ain't gonna' live forever and probably won't be riding when I'm 80.

Exactly. And when you're 80 and swinging on the porch swing you'll never say "I wish I had bought granite countertops instead of that Ducati."
Incidentally, I've always had lust for the Super Sport fairing design. She's a beaut.
We all have a finite number of weekends remaining. I hope to spend as many as possible on two wheels.

I actually think it's pretty stupid looking, the way the muffler sti.... Well, the fairing, where the windshield meets it, is... Well, the seat looks kinda....

Just make sure that riding position is going to be ok for your back. I heard it's hell for long trips for some people.

Yep, BCM Ducati. Pretty small facility- nothing along the lines of Max BMW down by the coast.
But nice people, NICE bikes and a reputation for very good service.
Ducatis (new) start around $9k and go right up to (I'm not kidding) $72,000 for the "Desmosedici"- yes it is road legal. And BCM sold SEVERAL (at least 5) last year! They still have at least one on hand.
But they ONLY handle Ducatis- new or used. They have shop rides on the last Sunday each month during the season- they start in April. Other brands of bikes are welcome on those rides- I did the last one in October 2008.
Stop by and try not to drool- it's hard to clean it off the carbon fiber.

I sat on John's 800 today. It's as beautiful as the picture but way to forward a riding position for me. Although I've never ridden a sport bike, only sat on one. I much preferred the multistrada sitting next to it. But the 800 is art.

Well....
Today I went back to the Ducati dealer (BCM) but took our 19 y.o. son.
We looked at both the Supersport bikes and took quite a while discussing what we wanted. Thought about what would be best for the roads that we ride on around here. Ended up buying....................
An excellent condition, nearly new 620 Monster that is still under warranty.
Pick it up in 2 weeks. But for the present time I will "stick with the brick" for when we both go for a ride, but at 2/3 the weight of the K1100 it will be my ride of choice day to day. |

Well, picked it up today by trailer. As you can see, it isn't going anywhere with the mud we have here (about 1/3 mile of dirt/mud to the paved road). But the mud will be gone around the beginning of next month. Then....
