Not wanting to hijack I thought I would start a new post.
I wanted a Dual Sport for our local Angeles Forest BPL legal trails and putting around town after seeing how much fun the ADV guys were having...right in my backyard. I found a 2000 DR650 on Craig's List.
The stock tires were worn out so I found cheapo Shinkos online. Both were about $75 shipped.
I considered a larger tank but so far haven't needed it. Handguards were a must. Bars are OK but the grips weren't. Skid plate was a must.
I added an SAE connector for charging and the small compressor I carry in a tailbag. Airing down at the start of our 150 mile rides sure helps, and adding pressure at the end for a slab ride home.
I did go one tooth (14T) down on the front sprocket. The DRs are geared too high for the dirt. I don't need 80mph top. It's perfect now.
I recently bought a Synergy and the SAE connector with adapter will power the jacket in the cold.
I removed the license plate frame and attached to the fender. Replaced the large rear turn signal with smaller ones. Kept hitting them with my leg....seat height is 34".
I must say I'm having the time of my life on these 100% legal trails. Never had them as a kid. (Always got chased by the cops)
This bike feels like a toy (385lbs) compared the my K1100 and even my naked Goldwings, but has plenty of power and I can easily pick it up by myself...if I have to.
It also gave me a chance to buy some of that neat MX gear I kept seeing.

Nice! Seems like more than a few of our clan have gotten the MX bug.
For me it's the most fun you can have on a bike. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

I also got back to riding in the dirt after several decades of street riding. Its the most riding fun I have had since my MX days as a teenager. A few years ago, I started with a DR350, then a DRZ400S, and now have a DR650. The DR650 suites the type of riding I enjoy most. I went on a little ride last summer, check it out.
