Just changed all the fluids in my bike and all was good untill I saw metal shavings in the final drive oil . A'm I to expect some or is this real bad
very little to no vibration. just did the oil and lube chage for prevenative mantence. do I need to start saving up for another final drive? or is there a rebuild kit for mine? or dose a BMW dealer have to do it. _________________ In the words of the stones

Was it shavings or just a fine powder stuck on the magnetic drain plug? A little is to be expected and you probably don't know how many miles it has on it since the last change, do you? _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

Fine shavings = OK - that's why it has a magnetic plug.
Chunks = BAD _________________ 93 LT (x2)

What color was the lube when it came out? If it was gray, you have a problem, otherwise you should be OK. _________________ Jim

If well cared, how many miles usually a K-bike final drive must last?
60k? 100k? 150k?
And the FD big bearing should be changed preventively or only when making noise or "chunks"?

Put Mobil 1 gear oil in it every 20k miles and ridee it until it craps out. That's my strategy. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

changing all three oils/lube at the sametime has my mide not remembering what color the final drive was.
once I saw the metal shavings my heart dropped. when talking to my son he said milky white I don't remember I thought it was a dark color.
so I will change the lube again in about 500 miles and see how much if any metal shows up. there was quite a bit on the drain plug magnet but when draining out you could see the shavings in the lube stream reflecting from the sunlight as it came out, and there was very small shavings in the oil pan that i collected it in.
nothing large no chunks. just as if you filed with a rasp.
thanks for your input and it has made me feel a little better about riding it.
I will check if there is play in the wheel It's the only way I know to check for play/worn bearings. _________________ In the words of the stones

IF it was milky white that's probably just water from sitting. That plastic cap on the top is a breather so if you let a bike sit long enogh some moisture will work it's way in there. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Have no Idea when the final drive was serviced the first time i changed the oil filter had july 2001. the guy that gave me the bike..yes he gave it to me. said he was coming home from Orlando to St. Augustine just paid over 300.00 to get it serviced ,and just before he turned in the driveway it went dead. no power. the first thing I replace was the ignition switch witch gave the bike life. so he let it set because of a switch for six years and just gave it to me to get it out of his garage.
I have thanked him manytimes. so I asume it was changed the day he parked it. I did'nt think about changing the final drive lube until now. I've put maybe 5000 miles on it just changing the motor oil and filter.
and if you've read any of my other post it took me a year of replacing fuel parts and brake parts and fork seals before I started rideing it
the gas was so old it had lacquered the whole fuel system _________________ In the words of the stones

Turns out that a lot final drive problems are a result of leaving the factory having not been set up right. I put over 40,000 miles on the '97 before the final drive lube came out gray when I changed it. I immediately took it to the shop and had the final drive rebuilt - and a couple of bearings replaced in the process.
If the lube comes out grey, that indicates unusual wear that should be dealt with sooner rather than later. _________________ Jim
