Something is seriously, unequivocally wrong with my tranny....with my second gear specifically.

Riding home, I was doing my normal wind it out through the gears when I noticed some hesitation and hitching in second only.

Heading home I paid specific attention to second. And it got worse....extremely noticeable, violent hitching and catching of the gears, or so it seemed. So bad that I avoided second gear altogether and just limped home.

Few questions:

1. Should I have someone tear everything apart and find out exactly what is wrong or just assume it is the tranny? Working 2 jobs and grad school I don't have any time to do anything but basic maintenance.

2. Is the second gear replaceable in itself or do I need a new/used tranny? If the gear is not replaceable, why?

3. Where can I look and how much can I expect to pay for a tranny? Is it worth it to fix a 16 year old bike with almost 90k on it?

Other than a few nagging things I need to attend to, the bike is/was running mint. I JUST finished a full synthetic oil change/filter with a half a can of Techron in the tank too. Crying or Very sad

I'm upset, but when you think about it I have put on almost 40,000 miles since my last major work which was a clutch/spline lube. I guess it was time for another spline lube anyway. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Any chance this is something minor like a clutch lever adjustment? Cool

Not that I claim to be an expert on tranny internals but it sounds like a bent shift lever fork in the tranny. Probably cheapest to find a good tranny as opposed to the labor to rip it apart and fix it.

Probably caused by you taking shifting lessons from JO.

(You MUST come out west this summer. I so look forward to pitching shit back and forth with you in person. Razz )

There is a LT breaking on ebay at the moment (UK) has a box on auction (190272884288) sitting at £29 and there are 2x gear boxes at £95 each B.I.N (120278469456).

Don't know what you pay over there for bits, but thought it might help, I could probably help with shipping if the seller was unwilling to ship to the US.

Usual no connection etc.........blah

Dave, when I talked to Fred about my fairing bracket he had several K1100LTs on the lot. I just called him and he will sell a used transmission for $400.

Ok thanks for all the insights folks.

I have decided to swap in a used tranny.

Couple questions:

1. What are the best/cheapest BMW salvage spots to start looking for one? I am expecting around 400 with around 75ish for shipping...sound right? Jim I jotted down your guy but I am going to shop around.

2. My mechanic quoted me around 4-500 for tranny swap, spline lube, and fairing bracket remove and repair. Sound about right?

So I'm looking at around a 1k job. Sad

The frigging bike better last.

Good luck with it Dave. For the record I have no connection to Fred other than he was the only one to get back to me with a used bracket. I was glad to hear he had several K11s there and that at least one was mystic red. $4-500 sounds reasonable to me. I bet the dealer would be at least 3 times that.

Dave, didn't you do your own spline lube this year??

If you did, a tranny swap should be a piece of cake for you.

Which could save you $ for labor.

The only thing different I think would actually removing and reinstalling the swing arm/drive shaft, which I didn't remove for my spline lube.

The exchange rate is about 1.45 dollars to the pound. So you could buy right now a gearbox on eBay UK for $140 plus shipping. I'd call that a heap of beans better than $400, in fact it's 260 beans better!

Another place to try. http://www.re-psycle.com/default.asp

or http://www.beemerboneyard.com/index.html I don't see any listed but he may have a bike he hasn't taken apart yet.

I've sent an email to both sellers, to see what the cost is, anyone know how much a box weighs?

Parcel to go (www.parcel2go.com) gave a price based on 10Kg and either 30x30x30cm as £54 and the same weight but 50x50x50 as £84.

Seeing as your expecting shipping to be $75 I think thats not bad! Mind you your taking our nice UK parts Twisted Evil

Not sure if your box is black coz the other auction is for a black one Cool

If you want it, I’ll ship the tranny I pulled out in Alberta. You’ll need to buy one of these, and have the tranny rebuilt. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with it.

Drive shaft, part number 23211457060 Max BMW price $333.44

Confused

On second thought, the labor cost may be worse than just buying an intact tranny for about $400. The gasket set is $62.13.

Can I have your broken tranny if you don’t want mine?
I might be able to use parts off both to make one working tranny.

Still, call me. I'm working until 0700.
I'll sleep tomorrow form 0830-1500.
I work tomorrow from 1900-0700.

I've shipped several trannies. Packed up they weigh about 35 pounds.

I've got an 80k silver K1100 transmission. $325 shipped. I don't have pics but I can get some next week when I get home.

This has happened to me twice.

The shift drum and shift fork wears and doesn't put the gears together as well as it used to. Loss of travel. The engagement dogs are able to slip in and out of engagement, that is what you feel.

At a minimum, you need a shift drum, shift fork, second gear and seals to do the job. The engagement dogs on the gear get rounded off from the disengagement and re-engagement and will cause problems later on if not replaced.

The first time this happened to me, I replaced both gears that engage, the drum, two forks and all bearings and seals. It was $1200 for parts with me doing the labor. Not too cost effective. This last time, I bought a tranny for Fred Rowland and took it apart to inspect and replaced all the seals. It was in pristine condition.
