What is the procedure for draining the coolant? I can't seem to locate a drain plug. I expected one to be on the pump as it is the lowest point on the cooling system.

Yes, it's there. You were looking in the right place. The temp sensor is also the drain plug.

Edit: It's the front one. The rear slightly higher one is the oil pressure sensor

Paul,

Look at the lowest point on the front of the engine and you will see a plug with a wire hooked to it That is the plug to remove after you have carefully removed the wire. The loosen it and unscrew it with a pan handy to catch the coolant. The plug you remove is a temperature sensor I believe.

Or, you can pull the bottom radiator hose - it'll drain faster...

there is theroy here i will try to explain.

the fast drain in which you pull the lower rad hose or the lowest hose on the radiator.
reason is a fast flush that will take all the junk with it and if you can flush out the radiator with tap water then refill with distilled water and or premix coolant. use a 50/50 mix for freeze / frost areas. ( zones that see 10 degrees F or lower 70/30 for zones above 40 degrees F above goto 30/70 mix coolant/water) if you can pull the thermostat and test it

i do the fast drain quick and easy.

the slow drain . drain the system by pulling the plug allows for a complete removal of the liquid while having the junk and possible contaminated coolant sticking to the crevases not having to break the seals on all the hoses and disturb the thermostat. you can't flush quickly and check the thermostat. the refill is the same as above.

just my two bits worth
