I've decided to repair or replace a broken fairing bracket but am stuck early in the disassembly because I can't remember how to remove the radio to get to the 2 screws that secure the radio box through the dash board to the fairing. I seem to remember a putty knife being involved but can't seem to get it.

Thanks, that will be helpful but maybe not on the radio. I think the K1100 radio mounts differently but I won't be sure until I get it out. The radio goes into a socket which is attached to the plate down at the bottom. I can't remember what holds the plate in. I guess I'll try the ice pick.

Salt use the icepick on the top, lateral side and bottom. There are 2 holes that can be possible tabs, shine a light in there and see which hole it is. Grab the radio with your fingers and pull up as you do each tab.

While the radio is out write the security code on the body in indelible marker.

The fairings are identical in most repsects. Same left bucket, same radio, same radio mounting.....

The only real differences are the fairing lower shapes and the fact that the main fairing brakcet are tubes on our bikes but are stamped and bent metal on the earlier Ks.

The upper fairing body is the exact same part. Of course the electric windscreen is different but the last two years of K75RT has the same electric windscreen as ours.

Thanks to both of you. I'll get back to it tonight and report. Dave, I found a used bracket in North Carolina for $100 and a local welder who's also a motorcycle salesman and ZRX rider who advertises fabrication of motorcycle parts. Then comes the decision to repair or replace. (OTG has the same cracked bracket as me.)

Nice work!!

I think even if I get a new one I will have a welder reinforce those eyeholes.

Not a part you want to break twice.

Where did you get it and is there another available?

I didn't order it yet until I discuss repairing the old one with my welder. Fred Rowland says he has several K1100's in stock. The trick is taking it off one without front end damage.

Is taking this fairing off as big a job as it seems or am I just slow because it's my first time?

I have the upper off only. the lower seems to be kind of floating without the upper. Is this right or is something wrong down there too?

Most importantly, what else should I do while I have it apart?

Here's my first attempt at posting a picture: This is where my bracket is broken.


The remaining fasteners are really loose. Don't know if this is the cause or effect of the break. I had to stop to look up how to remove the instrument cluster. Next time I'll have it off and visit the welder.

Both.

Probably not. The main fairing attaches to the upper side brackets, then the lowers attach to the main fairing body. With the fairing body off, there's nothing to hold the lower components in place. I would've taken the lower off first.

Lubricte the windscreen rods with dilicone lubricant. (Should be done annually.)

Mine cracked in the same place.

Took it to work and have our maintenance blokes weld it up for me.

I was routing the driving lights wiring when I discovered it. It only me about 30 minutes to remove the fairing.

I'm starting to wonder how many of them are cracked. I've been thinking that a heavy duty hose clamp might be a good idea. It could be a temporary fix for a broken one or additional support for a repaired one.

Here's my repaired bracket:

I'll need some longer screws to make up for the reinforcement. I want to mention the guy who fixed it again. He's a part time motorcycle salesman at a great used shop in Concord NH and makes agricultural attachments mostly in his welding shop but is open to fabricating motorcycle parts.

Back to the drawing board, this didn't work. the reinforcement interferes with the bottom of the ignition lock cylinder when the forks are turned to the right. Because of an offset in the cylinder it clears on the left. I'm going to have to cut or grind most of the reinforcement off.
