I recently had a really good experience with Blackstone Laboratories.
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/index.html
They did an analysis on the hydraulic oil in my tractor. It's an 11 gallon change and instead of changing at the service interval I'm now changing based on testing.
They also do a specific motorcycle test which can identify problems before they become big problems. Basic testing costs $22.50 and they're very easy to deal with.
I have no financial interest in Blackstone. _________________ Jim

So you send them a sample of your oil at the time of a due change and they analyze it?
How do you send oil in the mail? _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

At their website you can request a sample test kit. It's basically just a sample bottle with a mailer. You have to get an uncontaminated sample into it. When I did the tractor I opened one of the drains and let the stream go into the pan for several seconds to rinse the path. I imagine most bikes would work that way too. If you don't open a filler plug to vent it comes out pretty slow so you could probably get a sample without having to put more than a pint back. (We know you're adding a pint every few days anyway).
You mail it in and they email your report. You can see some sample reports at the site. The motorcycle one I looked at showed some fuel in the oil which I guess isn't as bad as antifreeze. It will also show if you have wear metals.
Let me know if you try it. Another site you might like if you can't stop thinking of oil is Bobistheoilguy.com. They have a forum devoted to motorcycle oil:

Gwen - I think you'd need to send in multiple samples taken during thousands of miles for them to get a history on your engine. Looks like they typically want 1,500 to 2,000 miles between samples.
They can tell how well your oil is holding up - and recommend how often to change it. They can identify foreign substances, unusual engine wear, etc.

Sounds like the same kind of analysis that other places offer for industrial equipment.
Sulliar offers it for their air compressors, Cat offers it for their big engines, etc.....
Not a bad idea if you do it often enough for a trackable history on the expensive equipment.
Not sure if I would personally have it done on the bikes. Just change the oil at the recommended intervals and ride....
ANYTHING mechanical is going to wear out. Like some other events of life, it's inevitable. _________________ Ride safe.

HI,
I drive (until next month when there is a good possibility I'll be laid off) one of the big Cat pieces of equipment, a Cat 793 haul truck. The engine holds about 80 gallons of oil The differential holds 180 gallons, the transmission... . You get the idea. Oil changes on these pieces of equipment are expensive, as are breakdowns.
In case anyone doesn't understand the immense size of these trucks, they roll on 12ft tall tires. The engine is a V-16 diesel displacing 4760 cubic inches (about 75 litres). The truck will haul a load of just over 300 tons, up and down the roads with a 10% grade in the copper mine in which I work.

Fleet operators with diesel engines such as school buses often utilize oil analysis on an ongoing basis to watch for wear and to help determine remaining service life.
But diesels are much different than our little darlings. _________________ '93 K1100LT
