Interesting web link to an escape tunnel from a Nazi POW camp. Unfortunately, of the 76 that escaped, only three made it across the lines into allied territory. The other 73 were recaptured. Hitler, in a fit of rage ordered the execution of 50 POWs.

Is this the tunnel that the movie "The Great Escape" was based on? Also read an article about a POW prison in I think Arizonia where 30 or more German POW's escaped. all were either captured or returned on their own ( because of desert) during the war. Hope one day to take a ride up to Colditz Germany was used to keep POW's during the war, it was, as I understand , not your normal every day prison.
Also on my list is tour through Luxemburg and Belgium to some of the WWII sites, some areas just about every town town has an American tank sitting in the middle of the village. _________________ 1995 K1100RS

Yes, but as with so many movies, it was homogonised to give it a happier ending. _________________

If I remember correctly, it wasn't that 'happy', not everyone was shot in the movie, but enough to give you the idea that the Germans were not pleased. _________________ 1995 K1100RS

I have bought an old Guesthouse just North of Dresden, and about an hour's drive from Colditz. Just to ease the confusion, I am UK resident but intend to move to Saxony when I retire.
Whilst it remained in Communist hands [ until the Wall fell ] it was totally neglected and was falling into decay.
After re-unification, considerable money was pumped into restoration and a large section has now been completed. I've been several times - for my own interest and to take friends who have come to visit us.
Over the past 7 years I have been going, there has been a great change in local attitude - like most "post-war" generation Germans it didn't come up in general conversation and when it did - it was rationally and not hysterically.
However, sections of the building have been restored as a "museum" of the period and locals now talk about it freely. Of course for the vast majority, that means hearsay or information passed down.
The actual Castle is being restored to it's original period style and decor, with only a small part dedicated to the prison status.

It always blows my mind that there are people that try and debunk the Holocaust as myth.
Is there a more sure-fire way of pegging the "crazy" barometer than that? _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006
