Can anybody confirm if an LT engine will mount on my RS?

They are different part numbers in the ETK. I suspect that there are slgiht differeences in the frame moutning points - but that is only conjecture on my part. The RS seems much more low-centered when riding. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

The engines are the samme.I beleve the different part numbers has something to do with missing spark plug cover and mybe the paint for the RS.The part numbers for a short blok is the samme.

Looking at the LT and the RS that has merit. The crank cover on the right side has highlights on it that the RS does not...I cannot imagine BMW having seperate castings for such a similar bike.
Cams may be a bit different in that the LT makes more torque in the mid range, but the structure and architecture of the motor itself has got to be the same. Economies of scale and all that stuff ya know. |

Taken by Steve today. It's not usually this bad as this was the 5cc oil I squirted into each cylinder for the wet compression test the other day.
It mostly cleared up after he rode the shit out of it.
Today while I was taking P.A.L.S. at the hostipal, Steve fixed the four-way flasher switch (soldered broke wires) and did the same for the heated grips.
Tomorrow he plans to rebuild the left fork that is leaking badly and put fork boots on both sliders. I wish I could help, but that's not possible right now. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Quick question.
Can someone tell me how to keep the engine from turning over once I find TDC and start to pressurize the cylinder? _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Working tonight. BTW, I'm burning double concentrated, industrial strength, extra sweet, extra creamy coffee.
Off tomorrow
Steve and I might go look at K11RS for sale near by.
As for my "quick question" I'm now 100% sure I understand how to find TDC thru the sparkplug hole. I'm fuzzy on keeping it there w/o exposing the timing chain or cam shafts.
I'm still not sure about if I should remove all the plugs at once or just one at the time. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Put the tranny in gear and secure the rear tire to the frame with some tie-down straps??
It will only keep the motor from turning only as much slop that there is in the drive line but it would be better than nothing without opening up the valve/cam covers. _________________ Ride safe.

I thought it was the throttle lock, but when I took it completely off, it's still sticky. The cable is fine.
It's the grip that's dragging with the cable not attached.
What do you think of this?
Well the heated grips weren't working anyway, and that just sealed the deal on them, but the problem is fixed.
Very free moving now
Ok, up date: I pulled all the wiring for the heated grips completely out and off the bike. No point in leaving them on there. Swithch left in place.
The throttle lock now works as it should allowing me to controll how much tention I want on the throttle return.
Steve and I also replaced 5 of the saddle bag latches. They were either broken or failed to work for other reasons.
He finished wiring and mounting the new HID's.

I found the reason for the shifting being clunky. The cable was pinched HARD by the battery.
Well, I was that far in, might as well replace the cable. I re-routed it so that won't happen again.
I've been running the bike w/o the lower fairing to monitor the oil leak.
I'm convenced it's NOT the water/oil pump.
But just to make sure, I cleaned the underside again, and will see if I can tell exactly where it's leaking. I'm now thinking the large main seal.
After a 1000 mile ride this week there was oil splashed all over the tail of the bike and along the undercarrage, and it used about 9/10th of a quart.

Hey Gwen, my looks the same way.
1) Is there a bolt missing?
2) Mine had silicone around the sump pan which I think was allowing the oil to wick though. _________________ IBA#42211

I see from your pics that you seem to have no rubber gaiters on your forks. If you fit a pair you will certainly extend the time between seal changes. I have now sold my K1100RS but miss it terribly. So reliable. So comfortable. So well engineered. Ahhhhh.
Gone to a Triumph Sprint ST 955 now but often yearn for the K11.
Weight was the issue.
Enjoy yours.
You seem to be getting to know your way round it.

I need to update this thread
Thank you for your comments and Steve has installed the rubber gaiters on my forks, I just never posted about it.
I really hope they save the seals. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Not this time.
Fork tubes were last replaced in Anchorage in 2006. IIRC. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore
