How much noise are these things supposed to be making? Is it supposed to sound like a sewing machine?

I suppose that would depend on what sewing machine you are listening to. Laughing
The bike doesn't,in my opinion, sound that that much different than any other engine with solid lifters. Not that there are that many anymore with solid lifters.
Thing is with the solid lifters and overhead cams you can't adjust them like the older lifter, pushrod, rocker, valve, design.

But they DO need to be checked on a regular basis.

Regular basis........ Rolling Eyes ...... every 16K miles. Slightly noisy valves is a GOOD thing. Smile
It could be the injectors too. My injectors make almost as much noise as my valves. You can pinpoint the nosie with a long stick or screwdriver. This is a poor man's stethoscope.

I'll tear it apart once it warms up again. I was planning on having a good look at it.
