Ok, as some of you know the Shop Whore was guffing blue smoke on start up and on excelleration.

I was told several times by several riders to add an oil treatment with my next oil change that was designed to help with these issues in high mileage engines.

I have been very sceptical of such things, viewing them the same way as 'anti-aging' cream. Rolling Eyes If that crap worked there wouldn't be any wrinkly old women. Very Happy But women still spend shit loads of cold hard cash on the dream of youth dispite all the evidence that it clearly doesn't work.

But facing an engine rebuild to fix the problem, I had nothing to loose to at least try it. Even as Steve and I did it, we both had reservations.

Well, here's what happened.

It stopped smoking at start up! 100% stopped! Shocked

Next, Steve followed me for over 200 miles an it didn't smoke on standard excelleration. It did puff once as a test under very hard excelleration (first gear 5500 RPM's)

My questions are these?

What exactly did that treatment do?

Is there any long term draw back to using this as it states I need to add it at every oil change?

Is it just masking a more serious issue?

Hi,
I added something called " engine flush" last week (I had oil usage as well, not that bad, but it did make the oil disappear…)
The product I used had to be added to the old oil, you ran the engine for half an hour on raised idle, with some aggressive flipping of the throttle. The flipping is needed to generate a good vacuum in the combustion chamber to suck the (by now, diluted) oil up in the direction of the rings. (and possible down the valve stems?) I did notice a lot more smoke when I fiddled the throttle…. So the stuff was getting thru...

The treatment should solve all kinds of muck and garbage build up in the engine (stuck rings being a result of the build up).

I could imagine that when there is a build up of carbon or sludge around the rings of valve seals and you where to remove that it would improve the sealing capabilities a great deal.

I think it was a good thing to do for me (I do not know if my oil usage has dropped, and now it the worse time ever as temperatures are dropping (40F this morning) fast. )
I am also temted to try things as Xeramic eginge treatment (http://www.xeramic.nl/prod_20103.htm) There is a german article (sorry it is only in german) done by a respectable motorcycle magazine that did some test with a simular product with some very interesting results.

But to go back to the oil… I think a good flush does us all good (where is that garden hose…. Wink Razz )

Thanks for the reply. Wink

I'm looking forward the repeating the compression test soon and compare the numbers.

That's not a subjective test, and I'll post the numbers.

Nice!

Mine mysteriously stopped smoking after I put the Remus on.

Still uses oil tho.

What product you use Gwen or did I miss that.

Here are the results from the first compression test.
Since you are new here, this bike has 180k miles on it.

Cylinder #1 Dry= 110 Wet= 150

Cylinder #2 Dry= 170 Wet= 180

Cylinder #3 Dry= 185 Wet= 200

Cylinder #4 Dry= 185 Wet= 185

2-4 really don't look that bad in my opinion.

I forget, I'll look at the can tomorrow and tell ya.

I'll still lose oil at the water / oil pump seal until I get a chance to replace it.

I also plan to start measuring the waste oil and keep a log of those numbers to watch for trends.

The remus might make the flow a lot faster so the oil is not as visisble?
Or the temp is higher making it burn cleaner? Does oil need time to "condense" when it travels down the pipe? If you have a high flow pipe, it might not get the chance?

Maybe all that soot is coating the inside of the Remus?

There's a product called RESTORE that has a good reputation - I wouldn't use it unless you have a high mile engine with compression problems though.

Whatever you used must have been a super-detergent and freed up a lot of old internal crap particularly around the rings.

I'll never forget the expensive "slinger" cleaning old airheads required before modern oil with detergents became available.

Yes, the numbers don't lie.

I used that stuff in the past with mixed results.

For me it didn't reduce oil burning or consumption, but it did make the bike peppier.

Sorry to butt in, I've seen this stuff and heard both + & -, but I'm pretty sure you add it in at an oil change, then leave it in.
Maybe repeat in a few oil changes if needed at the normal oil change interval.

Actually you add it at every oil change it says.

I am a skeptic that it worked that fast. Only has maybe 400 miles since we did the oil change and put the Restore in. But hey, you can't argue with results.

Keep on riding Sweetie...

BTW we are looking for mirror mount light brackets if anybody has a set. We got a used set of Piaa 910's and the HID kit for them came in yesterday. I am itching to see what these lights do with a 35w HID in them. Twisted Evil

There are 2 types of product,
1 The flushing ones
2 The "treatment" ones.

1: These are added to the OLD oil just before replacing it. you than run the engine (higher idle and flipping the throttle) than remove the oil/cleaner mix and add oil and filter

2: Add to oil that is in the engine and will stay there a while OR new oil.
this stuff is said to "fix" the engine on the inside by sticking to all the friction surfaces. reducing friction and "healing" worn surfaces.

You can of course add 1, do the change and add 2.
