cause im careful... especially careful not to leave a paper trail from mexico to canada...
so... almost on a daily basis... i log into every financial establishment i have dealings with and take a look... just to see if there is any unusual activity...
today... unauthorized charge on the visa card i use to pay our hotel stays... it happened sunday... they changed my address... they changed my phone number... they charged $55 for who knows what from vistaprint.com...
the visa folks said not to contact vistaprint... that they would take care of everything...
glad i got my card turned off before they could have done some real damage...
so i changed my logins and passwords at every financial establishment i have dealings with...
wondering what else they got on me... if anything...
kinda freaky aint it...

I know how you feel.
I have more than 1 e-mail address. 2 public, 1 private(at least as private in cyberspace can be )
I use only 1 CC for online 'stuff' and another for direct in-person purchases.
No ATM or Debit card.
No 'automatic' direct debits from my bank accounts(except from within the same bank) Some places do have electronic debits but only from my written check.
Short of being 'off the grid' (sorry OTG, no pun intended) I try to limit my cyber exposure of my finances. _________________ Ride safe.

My laptop was stolen almost 2 years ago. It was in sleep mode, and entirely unpassword protected. 5 years of tax information, saved passwords for websites (although no financial sites save that info), etc.
I spent hours changing passwords, making calls to credit card companies, etc. Even so, with my SSN compromised, I've kept a credit watch active since then for any unusual activity.
There was a $5 charge to a Chase Visa card I used to have. I cancelled the account when they put a black mark on my credit for non-payment of that (it happened while I was on my 30 day ride) and then when I called them and the reversed the charge, they did not reverse the negative credit comment. I had to call them back and even then they STILL didn't reverse it, they put in "paying according to plan" indicating I was a defaulter they made special arrangements with. I cancelled with them at lightspeed. And now those cheating assholes bought my bank!
And one other time, some kids in Michigan tried to order a new sound system for their band. They used a website I hadn't used in 5 years and I got a phone call from them because the ship to wasn't in the same state. I couldn't get them to give me the info on the ship to so that I could relay the info to the local police. Even though it was supposedly my order! All they did was deny the order and therefore never making a CC charge, so no investigation of a federal offense was ever made. Ever wonder why this shit keeps happening? Idiots like this that won't give out info to get people busted. I live 2000 miles away, what was I gonna do, drive up and threaten to kick their asses?
Other than that, there's been no intrustion to systems I use or violation of my credit or identity. But I'll have to keep watching for years, if not the rest of my life because I don't know if whoever stole the laptop just wiped the drive and sold it, started using it themselves or if they archived my data. _________________ M N B

How I deal with passwords:
I do keep an electronic list but the password mentioned on the list are simply mnemonics to what the "real" passwords are. The "real" passwords are in my head. NOBODY knows them and they are simply not written down. I figure if I get hit by a bus my wife can get to the $$ safely since she is an authorized "next of kin".
I was looking at a credit monitoring service like LIFELOCK but found out that the credit watches they do can be done for free. Simply set up reminders for yourself and rotate between the credit monitoring services (applies to US based individuals only).
New technology to the rescue:
IRONKEY drives (both thumbnail and USB harddrives) encrypt your data. Attempts to recover data by unauthorized users makes the drive PHYSICALLY self destruct.

My work laptop is now required to be encrypted.
I hate passwords.
Here's what I have to deal with-
password for the encryption before the machine even boots,
password for the O.S.,
password for the network/firewall,
password for the remote server,
password and username for the application.
After all that I then work from home. Sometimes I think it would be easier to go into work to fix things.
Oh, and I'm supposed to change them every 60 days! _________________ Ride safe.

I was in a big hurry one day and left my wallet on a gas pump. Realized is about 20 minutes later when I got home. Called the station then drove back otu there. Canclled all of my cardswithin less than an hour of leaving the wallet on the gas pump. Whoever found my wallet knew wexactly what they were doing and had alreayd charged a total of $1,800+. Didn't cost me a nickel but still pissed me off.
Then there's the time I used my Amex to rent a car from some non-maintream car rental company. Amex called me the next week to ask if I'd recently purchased $2,200 worth of gold coins form Tiffany's. Again, didn't cost me a dime but made me mad.
I have many other credit card stories too.
There are god people in the world though. One day, I left my wallet out while changing jackets riding through New Brunwick. Realized ti an hour later when I stopped at an ATM. I knew exactly where I'd stopped so went bakc and searched until dark. No luck. 2,500+ miles from home and all I ahd was my checkbook and passport.
What happened? Soem truck driver saw $20 bills flying around on the highway. He pulled over and scannged up everything he could find. I ad an emergency card with my dad's phoen number on it. Not only did they call my dad but his wife was smart enough to cal my credit card companies and tell them to not let me cancel my cards because they had found my wallet. She knew I'd be srewed if I cancelled all of my cards that far from home.
I begged my way into a campground with my SOB story and the hosts let me use their phone. I finally got in touch with my brother and he had the number of the guy who had found my wallet. He and his wifre drove an hour to the campground to deliver my wallet to me at midnight. They reefused to take any sort of reward. The funniest part of the story is that their last name was Nice - and they certainoly were Mr. and Mrs. Nice.
PayPal has come out with a great plug-in: for on-line purchases it creates a one-time use Mastercard that can draw on my PayPal balance or bank account. I now use that for all of my on-line purchases.

visa... the online credit card charge... they removed it from my account... closed the account... issued a new card... immediately...
skank of america... the online check charge... they dont seem to give a ch1t about anything... i hate skank of america... the only reason we use them is because that have atms throughout our territory...
so we get everything shut down and start over... then let life lock do its job of monitoring for id thieves and other vermin...

I hate Bank of America.
I am currently in the process of closing a checking account I have had for them for the last 5 years.
Every time I go in there I never pass up the chance to berate the "customer service technicians" (I don't generally mess with tellers)
"Isn't Bank of America the credit card company that got rich offering high interest credit cards to poor people?"
"I heard Bank of America is trying to get so big that when they fail they can get bailed out a la AIG"
"Know what's weird? If I get even one penny overdrawn in my checking account I get slammed with 40 fines for each transaction. Meaning if I have 6 5cent overdrafts I get hit with 240$ in fines. Yet if a bank or mortgage company steals, squanders or misuses billions and billions of dollars....not only is the behavior condoned and the debt forgiven, but they are given a check for more money! And that money comes out of my pocket too! How weird is that!" _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

what i learned so far is they used my credit card to pay for internet viewed credit report which shows my credit history and address history all the way back 29 years...
they got all the good they need... and there have been several denied attempts to use my info so far...
the next thing generally for the criminals to do is to score credit cards and loans with my info... which has not been done yet...
so... life lock has their work cut out for them...
crazy aint it...

Gwen - you have to read the whole thread. He's paying Lifelock to handle it - he doesn't want any premature gray hair or wrinkles on his baby smooth skin. _________________ Jim

i spent a bunch of time on the phone with lifelock...
it is apparent that what im paying lifelock for is their expertise on getting the credit reporting companies and the credit card companies to report activity using some or part of my info...
any application for credit with my info is supposed to be reported to me and authorized by me by using my cell number...
we shall see...
