Ok, so you know I'm not mechanicanimacal but.. I have to celebrate the fact that I took my screen motor to bits and put it back together, installed new sliders, reassembled all and it works. Saved myself £165 for a new motor..
I am ready to declare myself an 'Expert' on screen motors and mechanisms. Cool
Anyone need any advice on that topic, don't hesitate! Very Happy
I should mention that I undertook this mammoth task under direction! Still, it was my hands what done it.. Cool

Well done!

I was pretty happy doing mine..great feeling when it's all together and working again.

I'm going to have to rip it all apart again soon, both sliders have about 2" of play in them. I hesitate to even crack the dash because I know I will be in there for at least 2hrs.

I wouldn't even bother as I do not use the motor anymore since I got the Cee Bailey, but I do like the screen full up when it is raining.

agreed, though I like the fact that I can pull it down to have the wind get rain off my visor too.. All in all, an essential bit of kit! Smile

I am looking at doing the same project, as my motor is not working (I will try to eliminate the relays as a possible cause - any tests for this?). Advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Craig

Hi Craig, turn on the ignition and press the screen operator button up and down. If you can hear a just audible click on each press, then your relays are working. OR: take off the screen and the front section, hold the relay and press the button.. you should feel the click if they're working. They are identical so you could swap them if one seems to be working and one not.
If no clicks are felt or heard, use a simple circuit tester 'pen' to check whether there's power going in.. I think there are 2 large connections on each relay, one red and one grey (if memory serves) and 3 smaller ones. You can check for power with ign on and with / without button press.
Hope that helps though I'm sure there are others here much better qualified to offer advice.. Confused

Hi - I am getting a click (at least from one of the relays) - I will swap them with each other and see if I still get a click. Otherwise I will have to be taking apart the motor, I think. Please make it just be the relay!!!

Cheers,

Craig

Craig, taking the motor apart is not such a big job. If you're in there anyway, it's not rocket science. If you're going to swap the relays over, make a note of the cable colours because the smaller connectors are different on each relay though the brown is always in the middle on both of them.

I assume that the two relays we are talking about are the two grey relays next to each other just near the motor?

Cheers,

Craig

Hi - I have noticed I am getting the click from the relay only when I press the switch in one direction. I assume I should get clicks when I press it both ways? I swapped the relays with no effect, so I am thinking the switch contacts might need cleaning. What is the best way to do this? Demount the switch and spray with contact cleaner or spray with contact cleaner from the top (leaving the switch in place)? If that fails I will take a look at the motor, but I am worried about the lack of a click.

Cheers,

Craig

not quite sure what you mean by 'no effect'.. Does that mean one set of wires works whichever relay is attached or one relay works wherever it is?!

In any case, I'd take them off to clean them but first have you checked for current? I'd do that as a matter of course.

You might also check the wiring into the motor to make sure it's all ok i.e. those skinny connections not actually broken off and whether there's current there through the relay which does work when button pressed.

I don't know if I'm doing ok here Craig, I hope there are eyes on us monitoring and ready to correct me if I go wrong Confused

While you've got it all disassembled, check the runners too.. make sure they're running more or less freely. If you're not going to replace them I'd de-grease thoroughly and then re- lubricate. Mine were pretty tight so I think it was worth fitting new even though they cost (£130).

Hi Steve,

What I meant by "no effect" was that nothing changed. I was still getting a click but no action. As my windshield is currently at it's lowest position, it could mean that the up-switch part of the circuit is faulty, i.e. the relay is probably not the problem. I will try to give the switch a clean and then check for current.

Cheers,

Craig

Hi Steve,

No - sorry I haven't had time to get the switches off and clean the contacts. I will hopefully have time to on the weekend (but I'm running
my first marathon on Sunday, so can't guarantee anything - you will know what has happened if you never hear from me again!). I will let you know as soon as I get somewhere!

Cheers,

Craig

Good luck with that! Do you need a 'support rider'? Cool That's about the only way I'd manage a marathon... Shocked

Thanks for the offer, Steve Smile

No luck with cleaning the switch. So where do I go specifically from here? Being a bit of an electrical numpty, you will need to tell me where I need to point the black and red bits of the multimeter. Embarassed

Thanks in advance,

Craig

what's a multimeter?! Confused I'm an electrical imbecile so I use a simple pos / neg pen thingy with a light inside which lights up when the point is on power and the little croc clip is on earth (or vice versa). As you can see, I'm no auto electrician! But this method will at least tell you if there's power to / from the relay. Find a good earth and then check the big red line in on each relay with and without the switch pressed - might need an extra hand.. Then I'd just check all the other wires too ...
let's see where we go from there..

Jeez, when I was an undergrad, they were generically known as AVO's - appx 12" square by 6" deep and weighed over a kilo.
No autoranging, you had to know roughly what you were looking for !

Your odds of successfully solving this are not good - suggest you find a decent local sparky Wink

personally I doubt you need any complex electrical equipment - most likely the problem is a stuck motor but always good to check if you've got current or not.
Happy that your undergrad course was so useful chopper! Mine was less applicable for this particular context but just trying to help out nevertheless Wink
