Hi Everybody! My name is Bob Partridge, I'm 61 years old, Viet Nam Vet, trained automotive mechanic, and temporarily live on the East Coast. I am the proud (I think!) new owner of a 1994 K100LT. My other bike is a BMW R71 motorcycle/sidecar clone which can be seen under Craigslist, Baltimore if you are curious.
My K1100 bike was apparently abandoned on the highway, confuscated by the authorities and subsequently sold at auction. It appears to be fully serviceable but has a perplexing problem that I hope someone can help me on.
Since it came with no key, I bought an ignition/triple tree assembly from a well known member. When installed the clock came on and I get parking lights too - BUT - nothing else.
I jumped out the starter and the motor is not locked up. I tested all the relays (OK) and investigated the wiring harness but there seems nothing amiss.
I would be grateful to chat with any member who has expertise with the K11 sytem. Please call Bob (937) 508 - 7310 (My cell).
Any ideas would be overwhelmingly appreciated.
Thank you, and it's a pleasure to be here! _________________ Best Rgards! Bob |

Bob,
Welcome to the gang. It sounds like you might be living with the same problem that caused the bike to be orphaned.
This might be too simple a solution but I would suggest putting in all new fuses in the box under the left side cover. I had one fuse that appeared to be OK even with my cheaters on that would make contact if you pressed on it.
Good luck.

Welcome Bob,
couple of suggestions.
1. Pick yourself up a copy of a Clymer manual they're very helpful.
2. Here's a link to a website with color shematics and photo's. It's in german but it's not to bad to navigate. If you really get stumped you could probably google a german translation program.
http://www.cafezurburg.de/petergrans/Schaltplaene.htm
If you hover your mouse over the K1100 spot it will bring up a dropdown list of different schematics open. They are pdf format so it shouldn't be a problem to open. The author is an electrical guru and very smart with the K's.
Good luck. _________________ Ride safe.

Would you share the love with me also, please.
My elderly eyes find the Clymer micro-diagrams a bugger to follow across pages.
Maybe the bosses would make it sticky, for all to enjoy ? _________________ C1 200 (2001)

Hi Bob,
Almost 61 and a Vietnam era Vet. USAF flyovers.
Do you hear the fuel pump run for a second or two when you turn the ignition to RUN?
Have you checked the kill switch and the sidestand interlock switch?
With the ignition set to RUN, press the flash to pass switch (bottom side of the Hi/Lo swtich), does the high beam light up?

cavalier36,
I haven’t had an electrical problem. So, I wouldn't be able to steer you to a tool on this site of which you could have a conversation with. _________________ 1993 K1100LT/On going project

Roy,
I 'think' we have him covered. Just waiting on him to answer my questions above. He will get to them when the rain stops where he lives.

FYI: I am the "well known member" who sold him the ignition setup. It came off of the 60k K1100RS wrecked bike I bought a while back and I got it running in up and down the alley running mode and the ignition switch worked fine so I seriously doubt that it's a problem with the ignition switch.
I've spent a few phone calls with Bob trying to help him track down what the issue is. It really is a mystery to me since none of the usual suspects seem to be at the root of this.
When I ran out of ideas, I urged him to post his woes here and told him that bmwmick was probably the most knowledgeable reaource and I'm glad you (bmwmick) have stepped to the plate on this one. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

To All (Drake, Roy, Mick, Ed, Johnny, Scott etc etc)
My first bit of intrigue with my first K bike has been a revelation My sincere thanks to all for the direction and encouragement to press on. The Brick runs great and amazingly all the electrical subsytems have come to life. Some, like the electric windshield required a massive overhaul (but - NO money)
Special thanks to Drake for turning me on to K11 OG, Roy for sending me some tech stuff, and above all Mick for making some very valid diagnostic suggestions which led to a linear reasoning thread which solved the problem.
I must admit that this bike is certainly a fascinating example of world class engineering. I can see why you-all are so devoted.
If I can ever help anyone I would be honored - Bob (cavalier36) _________________ Best Rgards! Bob |

Awwww, shucks.
In my previous life(back when I was gainfully employed), I was thrilled to get called-in on a problem that everyone else had given up on. Just a sickness I guess. I was 'almost' ashamed to cash my checks since I was having so much fun fixing stuff. IBM never tired of paying for the callouts and the overtime.
